I think it's pretty clear what happened from looking at presidential election maps from that time. The North and West lost the election, the South and East won. The North and West then overthrew the president and installed their own. The South and East used their neighbor Russia's might to extract some land. Ukraine had a chance to do it democratically, but they couldn't wait until the next election, so their citizens started this in late 2013.
