Some warrior cultures, generally speaking, will not kill if they do not have to do so. The Scotts and the Samurai are two cultures that abide by this. As a matter of fact, the wooden swords (Bokken) were developed to fight and determine a winner without drawing blood, for the Samurai.
I seen it as a child actually, with my grandad. He was the first to tell me Star Wars ripped off 7. I'll have to give it a watch now, grown and ****.

That being said, because it was a loose adaptation of King Lear set in Feudal Japan, there are some details that are innacurate (mainly the court jester character, not many inaccuracies outside of that tbh) but it's probably one of my top 5 favorite all time films, not just Samurai films. I watched it a couple months ago with my wife, who isn't nearly the movie person I am, and she was so blown away by it that we've been basically watching all of Kurasawa's other films.

Fun fact, "Fistfull of Dollars" was a direct ripoff of Kurasawa's film "Yojimbo" Kurasawa won some money from the lawsuit and I think that's what opened him up to Western Audiences.

EDIT - Imbedding doesn't seem to work anymore? Here are the links

    Ran Trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwP_kXyd-Rw

    Yojimbo trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_1iT_GmHTE
    Definitely gonna check them out

You can embed still, they changed it a bit. There's a little icon with a film roll up at the top of your message box, click it and drop the video's URL, not embed code, into it. :

Yojimbo! Yes, another great one. Lexy knows the genre. Also the series Zatoichi the blind samurai is nicely done. It can be campy but its apropriate.
