  • Does Anyone look Fast with 16-18 Oz Gloves on ?

I don't have the fastest handspeed at my gym but i would be in the top 25% for sure.

Yesterday i videotaped myself on the Heavybag. I use 18 Oz gloves to build my muscular endurance.

Boy i was amazed at how slow my punches looked. They didn't feel that slow !

I had to do some shadow boxing with no gloves on just to re assure myself that i still had some speed.

Does anyone look really fast with 18 Oz gloves on ? Can someone link to a video of someone training with 18 Oz gloves on so i can check it out ?

Unless your Mike Tyson or some freak of nature, no. 18 oz gloves are HUGE and aren't meant to make you look fast, they're meant to strengthen your shoulders, arms, stamina, and hand speed. The whole point is to hit the bag for however many rounds you can with those bad boys on, take em off, and feel the difference! Contrary to belief (Alot of people say hand speed cannot be trained but this is simply not true from my experiences..) 18 oz gloves, when used effectively, not only improve speed but also the endurance your shoulders needed to keep throwing at that speed.. by the way, I use 16 oz gloves and I am 140lbs. I think most people use 16oz on the heavybag, atleast at my gym.

At my gym, 18 oz. gloves are also meant for the heavyweights to spar with so they don't kill each other.

18s are hurtin as **** but with 16's on im still quickhanded... i can double jab well to the body and to the head quickly and put together 4 punch combinations very quickly (these are short punches). I weigh about 195 pounds.quickhanded people who have enough strength and endurance and have quick hands to begin with should be able to punch quick with 16s on IMO. This other dude that goes to my gym has very fast hands with 16oz gloves on.

posted this on another thread, but the type of puncher you are can make a huge difference in how you respond to going up in glove weight.

most of the time when i spar, i box cute. I don't usually want to do damage to my partners - i'm more worried about working my defense, working angles, and get my timing down. personally i don't feel the term "respect my power" has any place in sparring- i'd rather save the fight for the fight.

when i go up in glove weight it makes a huge difference. 18ounces takes almost everything off of snappy power, it makes my hands slower, it makes it hard to put together good combos, it also has a negative affect on my defense- i'm not as willing to shell up with the big bulky gloves on and my guard gets slightly out of position.

another guy at my gym is a clubbing puncher. he usually wears 20s. he dropped down to 16s and the only thing i really noticed about his punches is that they got quicker and stung a little bit more with the surface damage- the concussive force was about the same. if i ever spar him again i'm wearing 16s.

We have a handful of heavyweight maniacs (and one light heavy) who like to climb through the ropes after class and spar till they bleed. It's usually the same 4 guys, but they don't do it very often. My goal for next year is to get "invited" to one of their little sparring sessions.

Whoever told you that handspeed can't be improved through training either doesn't know boxing, or you misinterpreted what they were saying. Do you think Ali was all that quick the day he walked into a boxing gym? Roy Jones Jr? No way. That kind of speed is built up through hard work. It's true that people have varying potentials for handspeed (same with power and stamina) but yes you can and will improve speed.

i never really had a problem with 18s because that was mostly what i used. probably due to the fact i fought at 280-300 lbs. im sure it can help with endurance though.
