Inspired by Derrick Henry chatter.
My first love is music, my second is football with track being my third. When it comes to those "pets' I have it pretty much covered. I won't use the word "historian" but there is nothing I'm not aware of when it comes to those interests.
Usually running backs are too muscled up to have "speed endurance" which is the key to "world class" sprinting. All fast guys can cook a speedy 40, it's what happens after that that gives us fast footballers vs world class sprinters. Sprinters train to build that speed endurance (ability to sustain/maintain a high % of max velocity/topend speed.
Before I list the fastest running backs let me talk Tyreek Hill. He is a legit "world class" sprinter, sorta and a college RB. His 20.14/10.19 HS times tell us it was just a matter of time. But.....he dumped track for football$$$$$. If he's stayed in track he would have been in the 200m Olympic mix.
Fastest running backs in history.
Cy Leland ran a world record 9.4 in the 30's while at TCU. It starts with him.
Little Buddy Young the first speedy black RB (Illinois) won both the NCAA/USA 100 Championships(40's) all 5-4 of him.
Ollie Matson out of the University of San Francisco won the 400m bronze at the 1952 Olympics. Also a 9.6 man.
Bullet Bob Hayes was a RB in HS/Florida A&M. So a legit case can be made that he was the fastest player to ever play running back. Multi time 100yard world record holder, 100m record holder and Olympic Champion.
Houston McTear ran a world record tying 9.0 100 yards as a high school junior, he was also a running back on his Baker HS football team, averaged over 13 yards a carry. Not sure what to do with a high school kid.
These cats obviously had great speed but no track credentials as a sprinter....Gale Sayers (24-11 long jumper), Tony Dorsett, Chris Johnson toyed with track at East Carolina, Same can be said about Bo Jackson at Auburn. Adrian Peterson ran a 10.2ish in HS??? Marshall Faulk 10.3ish, Eric Dickerson a HS 9.4? Where is the proof of those last three?
This would be the All Time NFL Running Back 100 (not counting those who did nothing like Jeff Demps, Stone Johnson, Trindon Holliday)
lane
1.Trenton Jackson 9.4 64 Olympian/Illinois, Eagles
2.Herschel Walker 10.23 Georgia/pick one.
3.Travis Williams 9.3 ASU/Packers

5.Joe Delaney 9.4 NWLa/Chiefs
6.O.J.Simpson 9.4 USC/Bills
7.Jamaal Charles 10.18 Texas/Chiefs
