  • Ways to increase endurance when skipping

    Hi guys,

complete newbie and just getting into training. Does anybody have any tips on how to build up my endurance when skipping? I go for about 2mins at the moment and I start to get really tired. I would ideally like to go for 10-15mins but struggle to go much longer than the 2mins at the moment. Any ideas how I can work on this?

Just keep doing what you're doin, we all start somewhere. If you can do 2 minutes, then do 2 minute rounds with 30 seconds or 1 minute rest in between, and eventually that'll get easy, then progress to 3 minute rounds, etc. Until you reach your goal. Skipping is a skill that requires practice and the only way to improve is by doing it, but also be sure you focus on what you're doing and don't phone it in, so to speak. Concentrate on improvement, on skipping with more ease and efficiency, until it becomes almost second nature. It all comes with time and practice, just don't give up! Once regular jumps become easy/boring, begin learning new tricks/steps. I use an interval timer and switch up my steps each minute, keeps from getting too boring and adds variety and challenge to my routine. Skipping has lots of benefits, everyone should be doing it!

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I guess I just need to keep at it.

Yep, starting is the hardest part, I don't look forward to skipping in my workouts, but I know how important it is, so I let that be my motivation, that it is improving my overall fitness and fight game.

If you can only go for 2 minutes than you just have to keep trying. Once you get to about 10-15mins of jumping, Id say just some ankle and or wrist weights. Good luck.

I would say at least 3 days a week, at least 5 (2 minute) rounds each time until you start to see some improvement. Then increase the frequency or duration. Everyone is different, but if it were me I would try at least that much.

not really convinced by skipping as a standalone workout tbh, its good in a circuit but cant say i ever feel as fatigued as i would if i was doing other forms of exercise (burpees, shadow boxing, heavy bag, sprints, box jumps etc). people say its for footwork but theres better drills for that in my opinion such as speed ladders or step up boxes where u can move your feet quicker. think its one of them things, that cause its always been done people continue to do it and dont question its purpose.

Don't Skip, for endurance! (As athlete you must use your time/energy wisely! Skipping from my perspective, is a exercise that trains your intricate motor co-ordination primarily!)

If just getting into training, definitely incorporate shadow boxing into your routine. Depending on your goals, if you want to compete, look into joining a boxing gym, otherwise at least try to get a heavy bag and double end bag setup at home. But at least in meantime include shadow boxing with a mirror with your skipping, watch some youtube videos that can help you get started with form of your stance, punches etc. Try to be as strict as you can with form as everyone will tell you bad habits are hard to unlearn. For youtube I recommend Expertboxing, fran sands, and there are some Title boxing videos on YouTube too, all of them demonstrate good basics and technique.
