Daniel Jacobs hires Soviet sparring partners to prepare for GGG

As Daniel Jacobs prepares for the biggest fight of his life against Gennady Golovkin in March, he’s giving himself what he believes is his best chance for victory. ****** reports that Jacobs’ 10-week training camp will host Avtandil Khurtsidze, Sergiy Derevyanchenko, and Ievgen Khytrov as his main sparring partners.

“We think they can emulate Golovkin’s style better than anybody out there,” Keith Connolly, who advises all three, as well as Jacobs, told ******.com on Wednesday. “They’re from the (former) Russian system and they’re all top middleweights. Besides Danny and GGG, I don’t think there’s anyone out there even in the Top 10 who can really compete with those guys. The fact that they’re from (the former) Russian amateur program, a lot of these guys have the same type of style and I think just psychologically, it will be good for Danny to be in with them.”
Khurtsidze (32-2-2, 21 KOs) is currently the WBO’s number 1 ranked contender to the title Billy Joe Saunders holds, but was passed over in favor of Canelo Alvarez who was named as Saunders mandatory challenger.

Derevyanchenko (9-0, 7 KOs) was a bronze medalist at the 2007 world championships and 2008 Olympian. He’s currently rated as the #10 middleweight in the world by BoxRec.

Khytrov (14-0, 12 KOs) was a 2012 Olympian and a gold medalist at the 2011 World Championships. He’s rated as the #11 middleweight in the world by BoxRec. He’ll join Jacobs’ camp a few weeks after his fight against Immanuwel Aleem on Jan. 14.

Jacobs team plans on having these three contenders “...emulate GGG’s style, as far as cutting off the ring and throwing that left hook to the body that GGG throws when he has his opponent on the ropes.”

Khurtsidze, Derevyanchenko, and Khytrov make for some highly-rated sparring partners, but do you think they can adequately prepare Jacobs for what Golovkin brings to the table?

    Bad idea.

The strong, dominant, physically superior soviets may badly damaged the weak, frail, genetically inferior american Jacob's.

He could be damaged goods by fight night. He should have employed weak Americans so as not to be hurt in training

Good guys to have in camp regardless, but they don't fight like GGG and definitely don't throw their liver shot like Golovkin. There's also a video of Rozier saying their gameplan is going to pressure GGG, or something along those lines. You aren't going to out pressure the best pressure fighter in the game. Jacobs doesn't have the chin to be doing something like that.

Lemieux also had Khytrov and Derev in camp too and look how that turned out. Yeah David's not the greatest boxer but it shows that Golovkin isn't as predictable as just hiring Russian/Soviet guys to understand how he fights.

Very good move on Jacobs part.
I never understand why others don't do this Kell Brook for example his choice of sparring partners baffled me.

Eastern Europeans tend to throw their punches differently their hooks are more arched, sort of looping & the livershot as discussed is throw more with the palms down in that system.

Not sure it'll do him much good but at least he is saying all the right things and going about it in the right way. Goodluck to him.

All these guys live in Brooklyn, train in the same gym as Jacobs, sparred before. Some share the same trainer.

It's good that they're putting a lot of thought into it. I think, perhaps his biggest challenge will be the physiological factor. That's one thing Brook got right. He wasn't encumbered with fear or acceptance of failure. Danny's team needs to tell him he's going to get hit, and hurt, and that he can't let that slow him down or distract him. I've got this nagging feeling that Danny will go into defense mode the first time he gets hurt.
