Ideal weight for boxing

  • Ideal weight for boxing

    My question is:
    How is cutting weight gonna effect my boxing performance, in terms of power, speed , footwork and condition?


    I am 16 years old.
    178 cm / 5.84 feet
    about 90kg / 198 lbs

    I looked up ideal weight on the internet which should be around 60kg-76kg (132-167 lbs).
    I'm not bulky but not skinny either( muscle wise) so I should be around 70 kg area ( 154 -165 area).

    I feel like something is holding me back in terms of speed, agility and overall 'lightness'. Could cutting that useless 15+ kg /33 lbs have a rather big impact on my performance?

    Eat what you normally eat, healthy foods, and wherever your weight falls that's where you fight at. You should be able to go the distance of whatever you are fighting in be it amateur or pro.

    Train, eat healthy, and evaluate what weight you are at when you reach the level to start amateur.

      I'm not a rookie though. I have been boxing for 1 year and 10 months.
      I will fight in approx 2 months, its not excatly about fitting in a weight class but just wondering if my extra weight is holding me back

        How good is your stamina? Speed? Are you fat? Power?

        I tend to post replies that are blanket statements. These threads help people who just look at them for advice.

        I'm a firm believer that a fighter is best where their natural weight is. For example Roy Jones at 168.

          My stamina is great for an amateur.

          I can do up to 20 rounds on the heavybag 3 mins 30 sec break.
          Sparring 10-12 rounds is no problem.
          Running is not the easiest though due to having to carry 35 lbs extra.

          I'm more the power guy but still have quick hands. But still I feel like something is holding me back on my speed. I simply wanna know if 15kg - 33 lbs has an impact on things like speed

          Not fat but like I said I have 15 kg- 33 lbs more than my actual weight.

          Igl guess my natural weight class would be around middleweight. But I am heavyweight/ cruiserweight due to aproxx 15kg -33 lbs of unnecesarry fat

            This thread would be easier if you posted pics. If you're soft lookin' you got weight you could lose.

              Its not about if I got some to lose, I do know that I have to lose weight and am pretty sure that I could lose around 15kg/33lbs and be after the loss normal weight.

              All I wanna know is whether this quite big amount of unnecessary weight has an inpact on the my performance ( speed)

              I dont know why everbody has a hard time to give me a straight answer.


              But if its that important I can post some pics tomorrow

                Sounds like you are in really good shape. I'm surprised you have 33 lbs of extra fat on you. What does your diet look like? Over time that extra fat could be detrimental to your overall health and on your joints as you said running is hard.

                At 5'8" you are going to be definitely on the shorter side so unless you are good at getting on the inside (bobbing and weaving) then you are gonna have a tough time. What has your coach said about this stuff?

                  My diet looks good but just eating too much.
                  I mainly eat rice (being asian), sometimes meat, fish and egg omelett.
                  Fruits and vegetables are also part of my diet.
                  No alc or smoking or drugs.
                  Sometimes sweets but rarely.

                  The problem is that I like to eat too much. Often having 300 grams of rice ( uncooked weight) which means 1000 calories( rice) just for lunch (not calculating what i mix with rice)

                  My coach told me to lose weight before fighting , which is reasonable cause I should be fighting middleweight but due to the extra fat I have to fight heavyweight

                    Yes, you are eating way too much. The fat is coming from so much carbs. If you have the option try following Jack Dempsey's diet that he designed for amateurs from his book "Championship Fighting".

                    6 A.M Rise. Drink a cup of hot tea, or a cup of beef broth or chicken broth.
                    6:30 A.M Hit the road.
                    7 A.M Arrive home. Take brief sweat-out and shower. Have breakfast of fruit juice, cereal, eggs, and milk or tea.
                    12:30 P.M Lunch of lettuce and tomato on toast (perhaps with two or three slices of bacon). Glass of milk or cup of tea. If you do not have bacon with the lettuce-tomato sandwich, you can drink a malted milk.
                    6 P.M Gymnasium. Have cup of hot tea with lemon before the workout.
                    7:15 P.M Workout completed.
                    7:45 P.M
                    Home and dinner: half grapefruit or glass of fruit juice or cup of broth. A salad with olive oil and perhaps lemon juice. No vinegar! Meat -anything broiled or boiled; nothing fried. Steaks, chops or chicken. Stews are good if you need to gain weight. Also, a baked potato, if you need weight. But no pork, veal, lobster, shrimp, crabmeat, or starchy foods like spaghetti.
                    For dessert: stewed fruit, prunes, apricots, pears, or rhubarb, etc. Also hot tea. No pastries.
                    8:15 P.M Relax half an hour.
                    8:45 P.M Take a fifteen-minute walk.
                    9 P.M Bed.


                    As far as it say for training just ignore that if you want. If there are parts that you can't do just substitute them for an option you like. I just started it and I feel a lot more energized throughout the day. The great fighter Jim Jeffries used to eat small amounts each day saying that a big man doesn't need as much as you think. I believe this comes from your body adapting. Also you might feel slugish at first but just tough it out and keep on for a month and see how things go.

                    Just learn to diet properly and you will start shedding pounds. Don't worry about losing muscle. Do you fight like a shorter fighter or taller?
