  • The Super Featherweight division might give us some gems...

In the next few years. With the world class fighters in and around the division, along with other gritty contenders, the 130 lbs division seems to be heating up.

    You have:

    Takashi Uchiyama
    Francisco Vargas
    Jose Pedraza
    Javier Fortuna
    Bryan Vasquez
And Takashi Miura sitting comfortably at the top tier of the division.

Then weight shifters in Nicholas Walters, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Oscar Valdez most likely moving into the division.

Then you have gritty vets in:
    Orlando Salido
    Roman Martinez
    Sergio Thompson
    Billy Dib
    Jhonny Gonzalez
    Edner Cherry

    And other solid names in
    Miguel Berchelt
    Jason Sosa
    Andrey Klimov
    Julio Barraza
    Andres Gutierrez
    Among many others.

In fact, the division has given us two fight of the year candidates this 2015.

Orlando Salido vs Rocky Martinez II and Francisco Vargas vs Takashi Miura.

With all of the names in and around the division, I'm rather excited to see how many quality fights we get out of the division in the coming years. Which fights are you most intrigued by?

I would love to see Vargas vs Fortuna and Uchiyama vs Gamboa. Perhaps Pedraza vs Valdez if ever they were to cross paths, and of course Nicholas Walters vs Takashi Miura sounds enticing.

Also with Loma not having anything left at 126 except maybe a Donaire fight, he's likely to be in the mix as well.

Walters/Miura, Uchiyama or Vargas would be dynamite. Salido/Martinez 3 should happen in '16. valdez to take a step up in comp as well.

      Good post.

Yup, excited to see what we actually get out of it. We lucked out with Vargas vs Miura and Salido vs Martinez, but with all these promoter wars going on... I hope we still manage to land a few big fights out of such a studded division.

I'd like to see if Vargas can beat Uchiyama right now, Uchiyama is getting old

            Thanks.

Yeah, I think Loma might be moving up before long. TR really doesn't have much for him at that weight, and if he's truly hungry for greatness, I'm sure he will follow the bigger fights at 130. It's not like he'd be too small for the division, and seeing how limited TR's stable is at 126, I don't see why he wouldn't move up.

Also, isn't Nonito down to 122? I'm not too certain Donaire would even contemplate dipping his feet at 126 again, especially not after the Walters' beating.

True, but power is the last thing to go. Although Vargas showed heart this past weekend. Idk about the outcome, but I'm sure it would be another explosive fight between Mexico and Japan.

True. I wouldn't seeing the rematch though either between Vargas and Miura. War Vargas! one tough SOB

If donaire doesn't go up to 126 for Loma he will be in the division even sooner. Loma and anyone would be a great fight as well.

hopefully HBO and Showtime use their platforms to broadcast these fights. If I'm Haymon, I'm centering PBC shows around these guys-making sure to have the fights in arenas where the crowd is hot.

Russell may come up, but he's a bum IMO.

I'm going to keep thinking about this.
