  • Lower weights vs higher weights

Why does lower weight boxing tend to get overlooked and have less appeal than heavyweights even though their full of action. Some HW clashes could send anyone to sleep and everyone loves it whereas you always get FOTY material that could wake up a coma patient in the lighter weights.

Its unfortunate but the HWs are historically the marquee division.

Personally my favourite fights always come from lightweight thru to middleweight.

Larger than life quality. Same reason why being a star in WWE under 6' is near impossible.

Bigger guys seems larger than life. Tyson, Hogan, Holyfield, Wilder, Ali.

Look at Floyd & Manny. They're only 5'7 150. They don't seem larger than life. Goes triple for the dudes weighing like 110.

You just instinctively want to see two big musclebound oafs bash each other when you see them standing side by side. Primal psychology.

There can only be one large musclebound oaf per village, form a circle and make them bash each other.

Watching the lower weights is like watching girls fight. They punch a thousand times and nothing happens.

Given that the highest paid boxer is a welterweight, I would say things have changed big time. The big boys were the main attraction up through the 1990s but definitely have not been in this century.

            Should they be?

Definitely not. I have long thought they were much more boring. The little guys bring it most times. More punches and more action. I'm glad this shift has happened.

Lower weight classes have no nonsense guys who go out and fight, not much trash talking, not much drama so they mostly get overlooked. Only at 122-26 do you see personalities emerging. After that its more hype than substance, look at broner. I prefer lower weight classes because the fights are better.

You will always see the highest skill-level and the most athleticism in the lower categories. Pretty much you'll see it in whichever divisions have the most boxers too sub-heavy cause competition drives as well.

But with the HW's there's always been and always will be the highest tension in the fights and the punches hurt enough that the fight can be finished at any moment and things can turn around in the blink of an eye.

They are almost like different sports in a way.

That's what I love about it. No other division has that.
