  • How would you counter an orthodox fighter as a southpaw in these situations?

You aint countering for points you are countering with the intention of knocking him out. You can counter with a combo, a defense and a punch, or just a single punch.

He has the same reach and height as you.

1 Ok he is dead ahead of you and throws a jab

2 He is dead ahead of you and throws a cross

3 He is dead ahead of you and throws a lead left hook

4 Ok he is inside your front foot you and throws a jab

5 He is inside your front foot and throws a cross

6 He is inside your front foot and throws a lead left hook

7 Ok he is outside your front foot and throws a jab

8 He is outside your front foot and throws a cross

9 He is outside your front foot and throws a lead left hook

    My answer would be

    1) Parry and left cross

    2) Pivot right and at the same time fire a right hook (thats the front arm for southpaws btw)

    3) Duck under and fir a right hook as you pivot right

    4) Parry and left cross

    5) Slip right as I threw the cross?

    6) Right hook as I pivoted right

    7) Cross

    8) Slip left and return fire with a left cross

    9) Duck and cross to the liver

Please criticize my reactions to their shots because I have no idea how to counter properly

              As a southpaw..

1 Ok he is dead ahead of you and throws a jab
A: slip to the right and throw your straight left turning you hand all the way over and should completely switched

2 He is dead ahead of you and throws a cross
A: slip/duck down to your left (hopefully your right shoulder is on the outside of is cross) then throw a long range uppercut from underneath (I find when i have a long arc in my shots they land harder), then finish off with a cross over the top, then right hook, then left cross again.

3 He is dead ahead of you and throws a lead left hook
A: I got clocked with a shot like this (but as a southpaw) 2 days ago so I can vouch that it works lol. as he throws the lead left, duck under it slightly leaning to your left with your right foot on the outside of his throw a left hook and it will catch him coming in.

4 Ok he is inside your front foot you and throws a jab
Aull counter, and throw your str8 left over it. sometimes a pull counter while parrying his jab and launching a str8 left over the top causes a 'shock' shot and can stumble your opponent. Im only 65kg so I'm not able to knock down the guys that I spar with one shot as they weigh from 78-84kg. But if your big enough, it might cause a knock down

5 He is inside your front foot and throws a cross
A: single side block with your left, come right back with your lead right hook. (as his straight right most probably pushing you back making you off balance its best you aim for inside his guard with the hook rather than try to go around the glove as you might be too far away)

6 He is inside your front foot and throws a lead left hook
A: similar to above single arm block with your right come right back with a straight, make sure that glove turns over and your low in stance to get that power.

7 Ok he is outside your front foot and throws a jab
A: as he outside of you, his puches are most probably coming over your front shoulder, so slip to the left, and low then throw your straight left. dont lean back while slipping cos you'll take to long to come back with a counter

8 He is outside your front foot and throws a cross
A: ****, if that was me (as the southpaw) I would even counter that, to dangerous for me lol. but if you wanted to then I guess you can parry with your left then come over the top with your left. as for the parry... dont use the 'flick-away' type, if you can time him then use the 'brush-away' (like almost grabbing his glove and throwing it away), it opens him up more

9 He is outside your front foot and throws a lead left hook
              A: dunno

btw, why do want knockout only? you doing white-collar or something?

1 Ok he is dead ahead of you and throws a jab
                  - Knock his jab down with your right hand and jab him instead
                  - Slip jab to your right and shoot the straight left

2 He is dead ahead of you and throws a cross
                  - Catch cross with left and counter with right hook
                  - Intercept the cross with your own straight left

3 He is dead ahead of you and throws a lead left hook
                  - Step in with a jab (his hook should catch your shoulder)
                  - Duck under the hook, counter with right hook to body
                  - Stab him with a jab to body (hook should fly over your head)

4 Ok he is inside your front foot you and throws a jab
                  Same as #1

5 He is inside your front foot and throws a cross
Same as #2 (should be easier for you to land)

6 He is inside your front foot and throws a lead left hook
                  - Duck under the hook, counter with left to the body
(This is a vulnerable position for a southpaw with the left hook)

7 Ok he is outside your front foot and throws a jab
                  - Knock his jab down and counter with your right hook then smother or get out of there (Dangerous Position)

8 He is outside your front foot and throws a cross
                  - Duck under and smother or get out of there (Dangerous position)

9 He is outside your front foot and throws a lead left hook
                  - Same as #3

                  See bold replies above

Good answers...and I definitely agree with you on #8 lol...if a guy manages to set you up in that position, your first and only objective at that moment should be to NOT eat a cleanly lined up right hand.

People also don't realize how effective the lead hook is against opposite handed fighters in general let along when they have the outside foot position on you. People are always trained to get that outside food position to line up the straight back hand shot, but the lead hook with inside foot position is a super short punch and can easily beat a straight punch if you are quick enough. It's a good set up.
