  • READ, in this day of lesser athletes refusing pics and autographs...

As told to me by Connecticut referee Joe Cusano... No matter what you think of the man, this is special. He IS special.

JOE CUSANO's Muhammad Ali STORY: I had attended many International Boxing Hall Of Fame induction weekends before but I knew I must attend the one in 1997 in Canastota N.Y. because my second favorite fighter of all time, Sugar Ray Leonard, was being inducted.

I had attended his fight in Madison Square Garden when he fought and lost to Terry Norris. I felt almost as bad as the night Muhammad Ali lost his first fight (in the same building) to Joe Frazier. But that night I actually cried. I was 21 then (in 1971) and saw that fight at New Haven Coliseum on the closed circuit viewing and felt so bad for the man who had stirred up so many emotions in me. I was huge Ali fan. I imitated his style of speech, knew many of his famous quotes and could even do a pretty fair Ali shuffle back then. My dad turned me onto boxing as nine year old when he brought me to the old New Haven Arena to see the closed circuit showing of Patterson-Johanssan. I started to learn boxing at the New Haven Boys Club but after a couple of whuppings I knew I couldn't do that anymore. I didn't have the heart for it. But perhaps because I didn't (have the heart) I always admired boxers. Knowing what discipline they had and the types of sacrifices they make, it became my sport.

I grew up in a very Italian neighborhood where Rocky Marciano was regarded as the best heavyweight of all time. I believed that when I was younger but Ali changed all that. In the 60's in new haven, it wasn't a popular thing to be an Ali fan, but I couldn't help myself. This man lit me up like no one else. I watched and read everything I could about the man. I didn't know it then but I morphed into an Aliologist. I'm embarrassed to say this now but it's true, when Ali fought Leon Spinks the second time I was so nervous and wanted him to win so bad I planned to be alone at my home and pray during the whole fight and cry if I had to. I was 28 yrs old and during the very first round my mom called and told me my dad had a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital. My dad was a huge boxing fan but hated Ali. Old school I guess. He still thought Rocky was the best ever and blamed Ali for just about everything wrong in the world.

I was torn between leaving that fight and going to the hospital or waiting to watch it and then go. I chose the latter. There would've been nothing I could do to help my dad so I figured another 45 minutes wouldn't hurt. I watched that fight and was so happy with the ending that I almost forgot about Dad. Well, dad survived and lived 20 more years so that's the good news.

Well, back to the induction weekend. Sugar Rays' style and charisma reminded me of Ali and he did seem to be a torchbearer for the sport in the 80's so naturally I became a big fan. That weekend I attended all the ceremonies at the hall including Ray's fist casting. I bought some memorabilia to add to my already extensive collection. I bought a beautiful photo of Ali fighting Frazier. I knew I would see Frazier that night at the dinner so I wanted him to autograph it. Joe doesn't mind autographing such pictures as long as Ali hadn't already autographed it. He graciously did and I even took a picture with him. I had met him before and he knew I was an amateur boxing ref, because I had told him on a previous occasion, so he would always ask how I was doing and when I was going pro. I liked Joe and admired his fighting heart. The perfect opponent to showcase Ali's greatness.

The Boxing Hall Of Fame is in a very remote area of upstate New York and in order to find accomodations I had to stay at the Marriott in Syracuse. That was about 30 miles past the HOF for me but it turned out to be great to stay there. Don King was also being inducted and he was all over that hotel but he wasn't available to talk with or get an autograph or photo from. He always had bodyguards and they wouldn't let you near him. Many other celebrity boxers were there, though, so I had a great time. Too many to list but I have photos with so many that my billiard room looks like the Hall Of Fame.

On the last day I was having breakfast at the hotel lobby restaurant. my bags were packed in my room and when I would check out I would make my way back to the town where the parade and actual induction ceremonies would take place. I had continuously heard a rumor that Ali would be the Grand Marshall of the parade but nobody knew that for sure. As I left the restaurant a miracle occurred.

    I saw Muhammad Ali.

I couldn't believe my eyes. The lobby was practically empty. He had a small group with him and as I approached a couple of the bodyguards closed ranks. I said, "Champ, I'm a huge fan. I'm a boxing referee and I just want to say I've idolized you since I was a kid"

He nodded and motioned slightly to his bodyguards with his hands for them to let me through. The guards parted like the red sea and I approached and shook his hand. nobody had cell phone cameras in those days so that was not an option but I suddenly remembered my beautiful black and white photo that Smokin' Joe signed the night before. I explained that to him and asked if he could give me just five minutes to get it from my room and if he'd autograph it. He nodded. I bolted.

Now, mind you, his limo was waiting to take him to the grounds. I was very excited and made haste. It took me a little time to get back to my room (it was a little further away than I had orginally thought), when I did get there I tore apart the suitcase, got the photo out of its tube and went crazy for a minute to find the gold foil pen that Joe used. I rushed back, not know what to expect, thinking his friends had convinced him to leave, but the man had waited!!! He was now seated in the lobby, waiting for me! (Note: SERIOUSLY, WHO else would do that????????)

I gave him the pen which he took with a very trembling hand and gave me the most beautiful signature I could ask for. That piece is my most prized possession.

I thanked him continuously and literally cried right there. I felt like I was in the presence of a higher being. I was not a kid, mkind you. I was 47 when this happened, but I couldn't believe it. It was as if I was in fact a kid again and I had met my hero.

I would've rather had that happen then to have flown on Superman's back.

Here's the difference. I went to see Mike Tyson's "Undisputed Truth" in NY I had never got to meet the man before and wasnt sure if I would ever get an opportunity to again, so as soon as tickets were made available I jumped on it. As a matter of fact I remember the night they went for sale on ticketmaster or whatever I was playing a poker game and I said to myself if I win enough tonight I'm going to by the best tickets possible.

I won a few hundred that night and bought the tickets the next day complete with the "VIP" package which included front row seating and a "meet and greet" with the champ... Cost me close to $400 with taxes and everything included but **** it, YOLO right ?

Long story short I went to the show and while I enjoyed it a lot of what he was saying I already knew from watching other interviews, docs, articles, etc... I couldn't really be "in the moment" because I knew after the show I was going to to get to meet him so I was kind of rushing the experience in my mind and rehearsing how I would approach him. Finally the time came for me to meet him. I had brought with me a pair of Everlast gloves, not the cheap ones from sports authority but the ones with the laces that's you would see in an acrylic case. His handlers told all of us "VIP's" to get in a single file line and "DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES ASK FOR AN AUTOGRAPH, YOU'RE WASTING YOUR TIME"... So at this moment I can see a few people had ideas similar to mine and starting putting away their memorabilia, I thought to do the same and then was like, F0CK that !!! I paid close to $400 to be here, My hard earned (gambled) money ! I'm going to at least try. I don't care what this guy is talking about.

Im finally a couple spots away from meeting Tyson and I realize the "meet and greet" is nothing more than him shaking your posing for a picture and you're on your way. When I finally approached Tyson gloves and and marker in hand I looked him right in the eye shook his hand showed him my gloves and marker and said something to the affect of "pleasure to meet you, big fan. I know I was told not to ask but it took a lot for someone like me to be able to come up with the money to be out here, I'm not from Midtown Manhattan, I'm from Newark,Nj, my mom is your biggest fan and I wanted to surprise her with your autograph for her birthday (bull****)" I can tell the rest of the people in the line and Mikes handlers are growing impatient with me but I wasn't worried about them... He looks me right in my eye shakes my hand and says "we will work something out " and winks at me.

I take my photo and wait outside for the rest of the people to be done. I see a crowd formed parked next to a escalade or Denali type SUV with security standing by, I knew he would be getting into that truck.

I waited for about 15 minutes and sure enough he was making his way towards the truck. He signed a few things and was bieng hurried along I yelled out "yo mike !!! Work something out ?" He looked right at me, (my hand with marker and glove extended only a foot or two away from him) he knew who I was, I could tell,he paused for a second and that moment his security guard kind of nudged his arm, he turned back around and off he went into the truck. Needless to say I was pissed !!!

I realize he doesn't owe me anything, but damn !!! The guy was my idol growing up... I just wish there was more ALI in Mike is all. Anyways thought I'd share my story Scully. I'm always on the lookout for when you post things always some interesting **** ... Like that paintball story lol.
