Well, the reason for this question is because of his next fight against Luis Franco. I mean no disrespect to Franco but I just don't see how he beats Fortuna. Anyhow, I'm hoping this does not continue for too long. I mean I don't want to see Fortuna's record blown up with nothing to show for it if you know what I mean. So, I'm wondering is Javier being protected or is it that he just can't get good fights or what would be you guy's take on this matter? I really think he should be stepping up in competition at this point and....again, no disrepect to Franco but I don't think he is it. It almost seems like a tune up if you ask me. Any insight?

i've seen fortuna fight from ringside, and i've seen most of his televised work otherwise. he's in a weak divsiion, but he'd still lose if you put him in with top 10 guys. that wouldn't be a smart move. when you step up you want to get paid for it. top prospects in boxing are a long term investment. the people who handle fighters know how to maximize these investments, which means building them into draws before you take hard fights, and learnign your craft against lesser opponents while you are starting out.
if they play their cards right and let this kid mature he can eventually get onto the networks. right now he's only got 22 fights, with many of those being against complete bums in the DR. he's got a lot of early stoppages becase of it. 70 rounds.
he needs seasoning. there is no need to rush at this stage. fans of boxing generally don't have the patience needed to allow a fighter to mature, and that's why they stay fans.

No he is right on track, his teams doing an excellent job with him.
Hes only like 22 & had around 20 pro fights and been in with good company such as Cruz, Hyland, Roman etc
Some may say hes been matched a bit hard, I wouldn't exactly disagree.
Lets not underestimate Franco here, maybe people are looking at his loss to Munoz but did he lose that fight? I didn't see it but those scorecards look a bit fishy to me especially with the fight being in Argentina. Yh hes looked a bit shaky in the past but this kid was an amateur stand out who regularly sparred and fought Rigo, Gamboa etc
This is a good fight against two very skilled, top notch prospects.

Is Gary Russell Jr ever going to step up? If anything he is the protected one. Didn't he have around 300 amateur fights? Hes well in 20+ pro fight range and still not fought a single opponent with a pulse.
Sure he might have fought a lot of guys with nice looking ''30-2'' records and such but they've been padded to the max.
Russell Jr needs to step it up.

this is a more reasonable instance where a fighter needs a step up, imo.
russell jr has looked ready to be cut loose for a while. i really don't get why they're moving him so slowly @ this stage. they might know something we don't.
he's also a tiny guy. what's he going to do when he's got to move up in weight? they gotta get while the getting is good with that guy. he's flipping 25.
