  • Jimmy Wilde & the old time Flyweights

I have noticed that Jimmy Wilde's status as an ATG may be in some doubt among some posters.
What bothers me about this is that the flyweight division is probably the least researched and understood, and hey, we don't wanna piss the Brits off, many of my friends here are Brits and I love em. What I want this thread to be about is about increasing our knowledge of the earlier Flyweights and even the Bantams as well as many Flys had great success there like Fighting Harada. It stands to reason that there must be so many tough impressive lesser name Flys among the half dozen or so famous ones. Is a little guys accomplishments mean little cos he couldn't smash Light Heavies and MW's to a pulp... Is there any prejudice here ?... Surely its there, even if its just our subconscious ?They may be small and overlooked but who here would not enjoy the sight of two great little blokes trading punches, I know a guy like Benny Lynch excites the hell outta me and I would be stunned if theres a fight fan anywhere who would not thrill at sight of thrashing little Benny.

No it's because Wilde's resume is filled with bums and domestic level opposition.

Apart from Memphis Pal Moore and Joe Lynch there's honestly nothing that I can see.

Hi Barney, great to see you again. I grant you that on the surface of things but how much do we know about those bums, there must have been some handy fighters there but not well known so the names don't resonate much. You may be denigrating the standard in Britain then,, was America really so much higher in standard at that weight ?.. these are questions I would like to learn more about, back in those days America was big but it was the centre of the boxing universe from what I have read, seems that there was a lot of good boxing and boxers in Britain... if not, why not ?.. Australia certainly was producing many many terrific fighters.. many now forgotten but only through neglect in my opinion, and all because many could not afford to travel to America, if they had en masse we would have had many more world champions.

Likewise, good to see you back.

We don't know a great deal but it's wrong to assume they are better because they might not be! We have to work with what we have.

If you're fighting for the British title though, it's only British opposition which is a tiny portion of the world. There's a reason no-one cares that Froch had like 5 defences of the British title.

I am not trying to assume much but perhaps some of these guys had some serious records.. how many Know that Johnny Summers was at one stage considered one of the best. Summers record was incredible, then he met Darcy in Australia and he returned to England a destroyed, depressed man who then seemed like he couldn't have ever been a somebody. It seems that way to me lookin at his record, it wasn't even e recognised fight, it was a freindly exhibition yet according to reports Summers was made to look like a beginner by a 16 year old, I may be wrong but that must have rocked Johnny Summers world considerably and what is a fighter without confidence ?..... not very much at all...... ----------------------------------------------------------- ------------------- It may have simply been a case of a guy who had a reputation blown out of all proportion but in my opinion the bums of those days beat the livin crap out of our bums ( LOL, my bums are better than your bums doesn't sound very good does it.. ROFL)
