If your looking to teach how to beat a southpaw you better not start by countering, you better take the lead! Any good southpaw should be taught to lead first and sit on a righties right hand so your playing into their strengths. Teach outside foot positioning and fight them just like their a conventional fighter. You need to work on slipping and blocking techniques against them and ofcourse figure out whats working best but you beat a southpaw like any other opponent, you use your strengths and be first!!
Don't get caught up in right leads and hooking off of their jab, just get to fighting and see how the opponent reacts to your offense. A controlled shadow boxing session so he can have a southpaw opposing him is a start. Just to see how the punches move forward from a southpaw. Teach to block and slip and counter off of those but starting off looking to counter spells trouble!!
I'm guessing this a young amatuer so don't screw him up by formulating some special offense you'll wind up with a kid who can't pull the trigger and he'll get out "first" all night against a decent opponent.
If your moving laterially (left)your looking for his hook (right hand)because your moving into it! I liked to teach my kids to laterially move close to a southpaw and double jab fast and hard and step in and throw punches at what they see. If its the head fine if its body or upper cuts fine!!
Yes right hand leads can work and hooking off their jabs can to but theres much more involved than that. I've never seen a southpaw who backs up very well then again most fighters don't do well when they move back in a straight line either. Hagler is a good study as far as a southpaw with good style and technique. He shows a good right shoulder and throws nice combinations off the stance! Show him someone good not a crappy guy getting beat up!! Teach him by exposing him to good fighters than sit down and try to break him down! Its up to you to teach then its up to him to recognize and react. Boxing hard!!! Ray.
