Why do US citizens refer to themselves

Why do US citizens refer to themselves as
African-American
Mex-american
Italian-american etc?

I have been all over the world (even the country Europe =P ) and the only people that do it are US citizens and French Canadians.

These are normally 4-5 generation US citizens who may not have any more family times to their mother country.

If you are wondering I am born in Australia but my father was bron in Macedonia, I refer to myself as an Australian. But if people ask I say i am of Macedonian decent.

If you're american, you're american. End of. Why does anyone have to claim what "kind" of american they are? Most of us are a blend.

African american? Almost 80 percent of black americans have european blood ranging from 12 to 50 percent. So...why say african? Just say american. You're black cos of culture, not cos of skin color.

You identify with the culture you were raised in. Does it need to be labeled? Besides, its not really the same culture as its european (or whatever land) origin.
