Apparently, if Ortiz hadn't stepped in, they were considering Matyushenko, so you can bet Machida would've been worth the money if that was the main alternative.

I can understand not wanting to fight on short notice but pricing yourself out?

He could have just said no, I'm not in the right condition for the fight. Basically what he said in that explanation but now that just looks like him trying to save face.
