  • Comparing Marciano and Tyson

How do they compare? They are both 5'10 and were crushing punchers, aggression fighters. Who was a better boxer? The Rooney-era Tyson could compete in that field with Rocky, but after they ditched Rooney he became a slugger instead of a boxerpuncher. I think Rocky was a little better as a boxer, Mike was mostly good in throwing combos.

Marciano was steddier in his approach tyson was more relentless, but in that marciano was a 15 rd fighter prime tyson was more like an 8rd fighter

I think The Rock is greater but, Tyson beats him H2H.

I like Marciano as much as the next guy i mean if ur a fight fan ur a Marciano fan but to me Mike was the superior, Faster, bigger, harder hitting and had better combinations. Chin wise i dont think theres much in it, Toughness and stamina go to Rocky but i dont see this one going long enough for those attributes to come into play. I like Tyson early, before 6 anyway

Marciano had the more accomplished career, Tyson would've bested him head-to-head, though.

The biggest two differences are in the physical & the mental. Tyson is streets ahead of Marciano in terms of physical gifts, & Marciano is equally dominant over Tyson in terms of his cool head & inner-grit.

I understand the huge size difference here, but I'd argue even though Rocco weighs less he actually hit harder, or at least more damaging. Don't get me wrong Tyson's throwing inhuman power at impossible speed, and his KO's are some of the most absolute in existence. However, Rocky broke skulls, ended more careers, and as a huge library of misc showing of punching power such as moving heavy stone with single punches. I assume Rocky can take more damage than Tyson, but would agree Tyson's throwing power unlike any Rocky ever faced. Still the fact that Rocky's never been KO'd makes the ammount of power to do so a theory. In the end it's not important how they fair h2h, and it's pretty safe to say Tyson would win early, Rocky wins late and the fight could abruptly stop at any point due to KO. Both men made their opponent stretch for them. Rocky used a crouch, and Tyson had the most amazing duck in all of boxing. Once a poor fool allowed them in range they'd rain hell on him.

look I mean I love the Rock but what you got here is two guys with similiar styles but one is bigger, stronger and faster. I don't really buy talk of Tyson being weak mentally and what not, that may be true of the post Rooney years but at his peak the guy had intense self belief and commitment ... the Rock is known for being an insane trainer and he used that fitness and endurance to wear people down, that's well and good when you are fighting small guys like charles or even the likes of archie moore, great fighters and moore had fantastic power (I know many consider Moore to be right up there in the power rankings, but how many of that long list of KOs are at light heavy?) not in the same league power wise as the Rock or Tyson imo ... I fear for the Rock against any of the real big power animals ... liston, foreman, frazier, tyson. They are all bigger and stronger than him and when he is relying on standing toe to toe and slugging it out with guys like this until one drops, despite his reknown toughness I don't see him doing well certainly not against foreman and liston anyway)

And I mean you can say a lot about toughness and all and rocky was incredibly tough but a lot of that is down to heart rather than a special freak chin ... look at frazier you'd say he had an incredible chin after TFOTC he walked through an unbelievable barrage without flinching but when the power goes up a few notches no amount of heart can't stop the KO .. eg foreman frazier ....rocky may be able to walk through Jersey joe or charles all night long, taking two to land one and wearing them out but he couldn't do that with Tyson.

How are you so sure all those were stronger than Rocky?? Maybe Rocky didn't look as buff as they, but strength is more than just being carved, defined. Look at Holyfield, he was defined as fak but still wasn't as strong as Mercer or some other guys that were less carved than him but were true hw's.

Ok, Tyson was likely stronger, but its not just about strength. Marciano was good to adapt against trickier opponents. Tyson not as much. He didn't fight many tricky opponents really...

Lots of good comments already from the fellas. I'll just peck & poke a couple of thoughts....

Tyson was much faster & a better "boxer", ie, he had more "moves" then the Rock. I also think the fear factor was greater for Tyson. Guys went into the ring like they were going to the electric chair when they faced Tyson. It seems to me that the guys who fought Rocky thought they had a legitimate chance of winning.....

Marciano had a far bigger heart & more class. He never quit when things weren't going good for him & he never chomped on Ezzard's or Jersey Joe's ears. Marciano was the better conditioned fighter.

I liked Marciano way more then I do Tyson. Up until he dumped Rooney, Cayton & crew, I liked him a lot. He came off as confident but humble. The moron who grabbed his crotch at press conferences, threatened to "eat" babies, whinned about how hard it was to 'live in his world" as a gazillionaire, well, he turned me off big time. *Note*-Tyson filed bankruptcy after making all that money....it could have fed the whole town for years where I grew up, but he needed tigers & cars he couldn't drive, etc. He was immature & irresponsible. No other way to spin it.

Let me touch on this also...Tyson wanting to appear as a tough guy or bully. Well, compare him with a Sonny Liston. Sonny beat up policemen & mugged guys for the mob (allegedly). Tyson admitted to beating up old ladies & stealing their purses. And does anyone ever remember Liston acting like Tyson, sceaming & grabbing his package at press conferences with women? Yet, does anyone doubt how tough Sonny Liston was? No, and he didn't carry on like a lunatic. Guys like Tyson, who carry on to that degree, are really unsure of themselves & use the commotion as a facade. Liston KNEW he was a very bad man. Didn't need anything other then that baleful stare....

If these two ever fought, Tyson ends it in round 1. He's too big, too fast & hit too hard for the Rock.

If I had the choice who to have as a next door neighbor....."Hello Rocky!"

Then again, if Tyson fought Liston Sonny may well KO Tyson in 1
