  • Amir Khan in pakistan, with personal security

WORLD champion boxer Amir Khan has sparked fears he could be setting himself up as a kidnap victim by going on holiday to Pakistan.

The WBA light welterweight champ could be walking into the hands of kidnap gangs roaming Rawalpindi in the Punjab where the boxer wants to visit family. The criminals are known to target wealthy Brits.

A source close to the 23-year-old said: “Amir is determined to visit Pakistan over the summer to see where his family originates from.

“It is something he has planned for a long time but he has now decided to take the whole summer off from boxing so he has plenty of time.

“But there are genuine fears that he could be targeted by gangs keen to get a share of huge ransoms from rich Brits.

“Even worse, there are people loyal to the Taliban or other terrorist groups who would see it as a major coup to have Khan as a prisoner.

“It would give their cause worldwide coverage because Khan is also very popular in the USA.

“He would command a ransom of at least £1million.

“That money could go to fund terrorist activity. Amir has been warned about the dangers but he is adamant that he is going to visit over the summer. He will have to travel with armed guards wherever he goes.”

Earlier this year, five-year-old Sahil Saeed from Oldham, Lancashire, was snatched by kidnappers who demanded £100,000.
