Fleeing Police, Man Hops Fence Into Women's Prison

(March 30) -- If a screenwriter put the scene in a movie, it would seem too far-fetched.

A high-speed chase in Cleveland ended when four suspects abandoned their car on the side of the road and took off on foot. Police say they quickly tracked down three of the men. The fourth, however, managed to scale a 30-foot chain-link fence topped with barbed wire, jumped and landed -- in a state prison for women.

"It doesn't happen every day, that's for sure," a Garfield Heights police spokesman said. "They're not always this easy to catch."

Sunday night's after-dark chase began when police tried to pull over a Pontiac G6 after Flowers failed to signal while making a turn. Rather than pull over, the car sped away, leading police on a wild, 90-mph chase.

Along with Flowers, Gabriel Huston, 20; Mitchell Buyers, 19; and Lamar Sullins, 19, were all arrested. Police say that they found seven bags of marijuana in the vehicle, and that Flowers told them he fled because he was driving with a suspended license.

Flowers, who cut his right arm on the barbed wire as he scaled the fence at the Northeast Pre-Release Center for Women, was taken to a local hospital, where he received 36 staples and stitches, police said.
