What is a "wanker" in America?

This is something I've always wondered about... "wanker" is one of the stronger swearwords over here in Limeyland. Basically it's someone who jerks themselves off.

But it doesn't seem to have travelled - it came to mind because I saw it in an old rerun of Mork and Mindy the other day, and "Mr. Wanker" didn't get a laugh from the studio audience. There wasn't even the assumption that it was anything out of the ordinary.

Has the word no meaning over there?

....Most people know what a wanker is over here I believe. I have heard it so many times from Scottish friends or british friends. You also here it on T.V. alot. It just isn't something that has caught on over here as a word to use on a regular basis.
