  • Uppercuts are key against Cotto not straight punches, Roach take notes

As I mentioned in another thread. I've been watching Cotto's fights against Mosley, Judah, Margarita's and Clottey's.

The punch that has been most effective against Cotto is the uppercut, Judah nearly kd'd his @ss in the early rounds. Margarita's uppercuts was what busted up and ended Cotto's night.

Mosley has a terrific straight right, he landed them against Cotto and Cotto defends 'em well.

Cotto keeps a high guard and does a good job of keeping his chin down, so if and when a straight punch comes in, it's landing on his forehead.

I also noticed that Cotto doesn't look at the face of his opponent, he focuses on the hips(a good idea for predicting which side the punch is coming from). That's how those uppercuts are getting through.

The thing with Roach though, is he doesn't believe on loading up on the uppercuts, because when you missed with an uppercut it's the easiest to counter.

I agree with Roach, but I think he should have PAC really work on looking for the openings for an uppercut as much as possible and following it up with either a hook or a straight punch for when Cotto's face gets lifted up from the uppercut

Cotto's face is a magnet for uppercuts. If Pacquiao did throw more, it would help against Cotto, but he doesn't throw them alot. Maybe something he could implement, but I don't think he will. Roach is pretty well stuck in his ways with Manny.

This is pretty well known. Manny should try to work in the uppercut, but he should focus on what he does best and not just use the uppercut just because Cotto is soft against it.

There is more then one way to skin a cat and trying to do something that is not a strenght can lead to bad things.

Remember Margarito and clottey were both bigger than Cotto, point being uppercuts are easier to land on smaller opponents and very dangerous for manny pacquiao against cotto because that means he has to box Cotto on the inside.

I think if manny can land ALOT of uppers he could cut cotto bad. It won't be easy because if manny concentrates on the upper to much he might become more predictible. For those upper cuts to really have an effect i guess he needs to land between 30 to 40% of his total punches as uppercuts.

Yeppers, I hope everyone remebers that Cotto's toughest fights have been against opponents who are vastly bigger in size than him (i.e. Margs and Clottey).. Zab Judah has a special gift for timing and landing his uppercuts unlike Manny.

Should be a good fight, Manny will probably need to stay on the outside, come in and attach Cotto, then get back out and box him. Cotto is a much better boxer than Manny IMO, but Manny's speed may make that a moot point.

I got Cotto on 11/14.. War!!

                Good point,
but I was picturing it more as a follow up punch. Like, if PAC gets a good punch in, then he follows it up with an uppercut or two then move out.

Or, I've noticed that Cotto can be turned, so if PAC is able to get to one of Cotto's side, I'd unleash an uppercut then move out.

Or, Cotto has a heavy jab, so I'd slip the jab and shoot an uppercut, then move out.

I'm not calling for PAC to turn it into an inside fight, no , not at all, but he needs to utilize the uppercut moreso for this fight.

exactly it's not the small fast fighters it's the big pressure type of fighters. I"m really confident about cotto in this fight. Pac is good and all but cotto is a whole different animal then dlh, hatton, and david diaz. This will be the toughest test to date for pac "going up in weight wise" Still say morales and jmm are better fighters then cotto. But cotto is a true ww that will bang with the best of them and take shots too. Pac better be ready for a war. Cause Boriqua to the bone cotto is ready m'fers

Plaster is the key to beating the hell out of Cotto.

If I wore plaster I could beat the **** out of Cotto too.

Manny will not be wearing plaster so if he wins, it wont be a bloody massacre a la Magacheatingbitch
