Definitely never tried it, but I'd jump on it if I had the chance. My base is mostly grappling so it's intrigued me.

seems like a very great art indeed. and i am not just saying that cause part of my family comes from that side of asia either! it seems somewhat like judo combined with chinese fast wrestling if i remember correctly. i have a few books on the methods but haven't read them in a while.

          i say, go for it!

after 1 year u should be a helluva guy to mess with to an ordinary average joe. my throwing comes from my second style - my main one is a chinese boxing style.

PALMA - hey bro. how would u describe sambo? and its techniques and mindset?

and, did u get a PM from me about out local regional fighting tournament? i know u would have loved it. i did.

They have categories like first, second and third and all the way to Masters. But our instructor used the belt system.

First of all there are several styles of Sambo out there. There is Sport Sambo which has a lot of wrestling and Judo techniques within the system. Combat Sambo (which I am trained in) has weapon disarm, throws and leg joint manipulations. The "Combat Sambo" that has been made popular by Fedor are "Competition Combat Sambo" and that is similiar to the MMA style fights you see out there. That competition style Combat Sambo is more wrestling, Judo and kickboxing based.

They also have military style Sambo that the Slavic military uses that is similar to the Krav Maga that the Israeli military use. They call this Sambo style "Special Sambo". This has a a lot of weapon retention techniques as well as knife and club techniques.

The one that is most popular in the US is Freestyle Sambo. That is the organization I am affiliated with called American Sambo Federation and If you guys are interested in learning more about it just log onto to the webiste below:

thanks man. sounds much like our Gao Shi Bagua Zhang. the creater of gao style was a master in chinese fast wrestling, so, it makes sense that we share some common concepts of joint manipulation, throws, and takedowns.

imma check into my personal library and check out my books on sambo. i remember thinking "ah! that looks familiar!"

to the guy asking, go do it! personally, i say always find the best teacher, and not worry about style. but sambo, as far as i know, seems really good. and it will toughen your ass up too.
