It's because there is some capital in being oppressed. Everyone wants to play at being oppressed because it makes them feel special and by claiming Celtic origin you can pretend that you have been kept back even though your daddy earns six figures and you drive a Jetta.

What irritates me more is Americans calling themselves 'Irish' or 'Italian'. I don't care if your great grandad went to Ireland for a day once, if you weren't born there you aren't Irish. You're American. Stop being so ashamed.

Yup you hit it right on the head. The thing I find the funniest is how every white person I meet, when it's time for them to share their "ethnic" background, it's never English.

It's always Irish, German or Polish. It's like they are embarrassed to admit that the majority of white people in America, have English roots.

The worst one is when white Americans talk about how they are 1/8th Cherokee Indian.....lol. That **** makes me laugh so hard, especially when they are blond and blue eyed.

200 years ago, being an Native American was like being a dog, a savage. They weren't considered even human. Now, white people claim to be a quarter this and a half that, **** is hilarious to me.

Why would people brag about being German? ie WW2...

I'm European mutt. English, French, German, Scottish, Irish. I was told that I have some American Indian in my blood somewhere but I usually exclude that since it is such a small amount and being blond haired and blue eyed, nobody would take me seriously, like you said.. I don't get why someone would be embarrassed to admit they have English roots. Maybe the white folks you talked with actually don't have any English roots. Eventually, everyone will be mixed race anyway.
