  • Keep your hands up!!!

A very underrated and easier said than done rule. I used to always criticize boxers that would get clocked for not keeping their hands up to protect their face. But as I know am a month into boxing at this gym, I realize its easier said than done. They are constantly have to remind me to keep my hands up during boxing drills.

    Anyone else have this issue?

    Practice, Practice and more practice!

Also when you start sparring and you keep getting tagged you'll soon learn to keep your hands up.

During drills at my club we're allowed to lightly tag our partner if they drop their hands. It keeps you real sharp and disciplined!

keep ur hands plastered on the sides of your head and give urself little taps to remind urself ur hands are there, that will teach u to do it. if u dont feel urself tapping ur head, u know ur hands arent where they're supposed to be...

When I'm working the pads and doing other excercises I'm pretty good at keeping them up but when I step into the ring to spar I often lose focus and drop them along with forgetting about different combos i've worked on. I get a good reminder though when I smashed with a hook though. The more I spar I'm sure the more natural it will become to me but I do have to agree that when my shoulders tire out it makes it difficult to keep the arms up and to also to continue to throw jabs. As a matter of fact, does anyone have any routines or advice as to how they strengthened their shoulders?

i have a natural tendency to put my hands out and to shoe-shine a bit. i keep them up, mostly, but they are out away from my body and i really need to keep my elbows tight since i'm so tall and my torso and ribs are such BIG targets.

i actually have better form if i drop my right into a flicker jab position. ha. go figure. but thats how i plan on fighting eventually. (50/50 southpaw regular/flicker jab)

but yeah its hard. bring your hands back to your ears for a day or so, that helped me. or slap yourself in the face. something like that. if i was working with focus pads more it would prob be second nature by now. much easier to want to block if you have to!

When you practice it in the beginning of your boxing career,it wont be as hard because you're used to it. Using larger gloves work also, like 14 or 16s.

shadow box with gloves or pads underneath your elbows so you have too hold it with your arms an elbows..after that, it becomes really natural

i keep my right hand high but my left quite low i'm quite tall so i can use my shoulder or a little head movement to block right hands and i get alot more snap from a rising jab.

just out of interest, who can name me some 'great' boxers who always kept both hands high? IME all the best their left low and sometimes thier right as well!
