First of all: What part of your fist are you supposed to punch with?? I've heard that in order to promote proper alignment between the hand and the ulna and radius, it's proper to punch with the last 3 knuckles in the hand (pinkie, ring, middle fingers) Your thoughts??

Secondly: What is a good way to improve hand speed without a speed bag.

Thanks for your help guys! I'm new at this boxing stuff.

that advice is absolutly wrong. You punch with your first two knuckles. Punching with the last three will result in a broken hand.

You can punch with the first 2 or last 3 knuckles, but decide on one or the other. The crazy bag is better than the speed bag for hand speed. Anyway, you can practice hand speed on the heavy bag. Just take all the power off the punch and go for speed.....

i never thought about punching...i usually want my middle finger knuckle to hit first...

you could do drills on the heavybag and some weighted shadowboxing with 1-2 lbs

You hit with the ring finger for full power. Hitting with the first two knuckles (index and middle) creates an "impure" power line. Hold your right arm out straight in front of you, knuckles up and in a fist. Notice an imaginary line running from your shoulder, through your elbow, through your forearm, and into your ring finger knuckle. If you hit with your first two knuckles, the line isn't straight is it? The index finger especially screws it up, diverts it too far to the left. You want this line to be perfectly straight as a straight line is stronger and channels energy better than a bent one.

If you want to hit correctly, aim to hit with the ring finger.

            Quoted for truth...

Even Jack Dempsey says as much in his book; though he says the power line goes closer to the pinky, he recommends hitting with ring finger.
