  • Anyone put extra training into their defence?

I'm sure most people like being on the offensive but do you guys put extra training into your defence - i.e. spend separate time working on it?

I would like to improve my defence - any advice on the best stance and drills/techniques for defence?

The only defense training I get is when the trainer slaps me if my one of my hands down, or don't bring them back fast enough.

Absolutely, I have shadowboxing rounds where I just work on footwork and bobbing and weaving without throwing any punches.

Although I have been out of training for some years now, I would not allow any boxer I was looking after to spar until he could prove he was not easy to hit. If you had seen James Toney fight Sam Peter you would have seen two defensive extremes at work. Sam Peter is easy to hit and Toney hit him at will. Toney is hard to hit and Peter only hit him when Toney got sloppy. If I took over Peter's training, we would go right back to basics. Things like chin down, guard up, move your head........ And what about the ring drills that he has obviously never done? If you smack him on the side of the head enough times and yell at him, sooner or later he will learn to concentrate on his opponent and defend himself properly! Sam Peter will never have James Toney's talent, but he does not have to be so easy to hit.

You don't need to be easy to hit either.
