  • Awful at sparring and bad instincts help

been boxing for roughly 3 months and i have noticed that my punches are more accurate, powerful and I'm generally better and can slip and roll and such. i haven't done full sparring yet but have done light sparring and it seems like when i do the sparring even though it is light, it feels like everything i have learned goes out the window and i get hit super easily and can't roll in time (my defence goes especially bad). its weird cause my padwork and heavy bag looks good but when it comes to an actual opponent i feel awful and i lose balance and lean back instead of rolling instinctually. is there any advice of any sort on this ?

Keep doing it. As you've noted yourself, bagwork and padwork are no substitute for a human.

Just keep it up man, everyone gets that feeling when sparing at times, it's normal, keep it up and you will improve for sure

It takes time. The more you do it the better you get.

More sparring is the key. When you know exactly what movements you will do in advance, you are not challenged to improve anticipation, dexterity and balance.
Training on the heavy bag, speed bag etc are fine and useful but don't provide the spontaneity to improve the balance, dexterity and anticipation you'll need in the ring.
Keep at the sparring, short, focused sessions at first.
Keep at it and you will see lots of improvement.

Everything sounds normal and good. You said you're making progress, which is great to hear. EVERYONE finds sparring harder because the target is moving. Your form and balance become critical. At this point, you should start focusing on your footwork. That'll allow you to land and move. Keep sparring and learn from it. Reflect on what you did right and wrong.
