  • protiens or diet

    Hi
I have a 14 & 15 year old boys that are boxers, they have both been boxing for 5 yrs. 15 year old 5ft 11 & 60kg 14 yr old 5ft 9 & 50 kg they train 4 nights per week. sparring on 2 of those nights. can you recommend a particular protien shake that may help them & also boost their energy level.Or would it be a better option to concentrate on their diet ?i feel that they are burning off muscle with the regime they have. I have been reading up & I am baffled by the amount of different info that is online. So I am turning to you guys for some advice. Many thanks "

I don't think they should be sparring twice a week consistently. That's a lot for a kid.

But that's besides the point. Don't bother with protein shakes, just add maybe a protein snack or two throughout the day, and make sure they eat a healthy meal after workouts.

Not all kids get very noticeably muscular from boxing either. And boxing really isnt a sport where you going to add a lot of muscle size anyway. Those guys like Holyfield and Tyson, those guys are genetically gifted, the rest of us won't look like that from boxing.

I would weigh them weekly and try to keep a log. It's likely your probably worried about it for no reason.

They are still growing into their body at that age

A lot of protein shakes also have quite high concentrations of caffeine, plus I would run anything like that past their parents

I would concentrate on plenty of dark green veg, kale and brassicas (cabbages) French beans, broccoli. Chicken and fish.

Get them eating clean from an early age with lots of water, you will be teaching them a very valuable life lesson

Have them lift weights. I'm naturally a tall skinny guy and by just eating bigger portions and lifting 3 or 4 times per week I put on some muscle and more importantly strength faster than normal (about 10 lbs of muscle in 2 months).

It isn't rocket science like some folks in the fitness industry will attempt to portray. Get them on a good beginner program, be consistent, and keep progressing.

Thanks for the reply, The sparring is only for 10 or 15 mins twice a week .I dont really want them to look like tyson or holyfield anyway, the problem is that they are not putting any weight on at all. my 14 year old has been floating around 49 - 50kg for about 2 years now & has grown a bit in height, this is the bit that worries me a little. They both eat really healthily normally , Just thought a bit of extra protien would help keep the balance ? I will get them on the weights & give it a try even if it helps with their appetite.

Think of your own body when you were 15, 16 or even 18. Most adolescent men don't fully grow into their body until they hit 20.

Heck when I look at my self at 20, although I thought I was a man, I was incredibly lean, gangly limbs and spindly legs, with ridiculous high metabolism (like most kids) power and strength will come, it's inevitable once you grow into your body
