Thanks for all the advice guys. I've sparred with him a couple times since with a bit more success. Haven't had time to post in quite a bit though.
I tried to get the head movement going but this guy has such speed that it doesn't work. I don't even get the feeling that he has to adjust for it maybe something I'm doing wrong or a head speed issue? So I was stuck using head movement only sporadically and only really being able to dodge by moving backwards. I found the most success ironically enough by trying to fight like an outside fighter, making him be the aggressor. Jump in pop a couple jabs then jump out and make him come at me. He almost always misjudged his distance, or I could step forward at the same time as him, and nullify the reach advantage.
I did a lot of pivot steps when I would come in, rotating towards his left and this threw him off, caught him with a hook almost every time. The highlight was when I threw the jab three times in a row, hard, and gauging his movement, caught him with a right hook after feinting the jab. See he stepped left away from my jab each time (I'm southpaw which probably led to this confusion), towards my backfoot. I'm probably too proud of myself but I had never made an opponent react and then exploited that reaction before, it was a good feeling.

[QUOTE=them_apples;14851933]Just because hes 160 doesn't mean he wasn't in a higher weight class than you. You said you were 180 but over weight. In boxing you need to be at an ideal weight class, very low body fat (fat slows you down, tires you and makes you heavier) and a good proportion of functional muscle. To much muscle can be bad sometimes as muscle drains a lot of energy and can put you into a higher weight class bracket. It is import to get comfortable in your weight class - the punching power received, the speed etc.

Honestly what weight I can drop to comfortably is a mystery to me, in high school I was solid at 180, now I'm soft but I've come down from 240 and haven't had even the hint of a gut since I've hit 200. I think this guy could drop more weight than me just looking at him though. I'm sort of the stocky type and he is potentially able to hit lightweight even at 6'1" or so. I've never been south of 170 since I reached full growth but honestly even the middleweights I see at local AM competitions are scary looking to me so I hope I can get lower. I really wish I could be the tall guy.
