  • Pulling back your punches?

Ive heard the advise that you should pull back your punches after throwing them out!

Well my punches snap back all by themselves and quickly.

Is this advise poor advise or good advise and why?

In what situation would you ever leave your arms out after you throw a punch?

Well you cant leave them out if they snap back automatically, unless someone physically holds them or you purposely just post your hand on some short guys head or something to really piss him off.

Your dedication to trolling is impressive but after reading your past few threads you tried a little to hard kinda gave it away.

But props on the stuff you do in here.

Is box, not streetfight. Punch with fist, go to parents, say hi then fist come back.

None really, although to be pedantic, a lot of tall fighters (including me) might throw the jab and leave it out in the person's chest momentarily so they can't reach you, if facing a shorter opponent. I have instinctively done this a few times when I can sense the hook counter coming, jabbed and stuck it out there in the person's chest like a telegraph pole and kind of pushed them off, or held them there.

Probably not the best technique ever, but I've observed the likes of Klitschko, Ali, Lewis etc. doing this from time to time.

However you strike your hands are going to bounce a bit off the bag. If you don't pull your punches you will have to manually move your hands back to fight position, it's a very slight motion so it's hard to recognize. Try throwing a single punch, and then immediately after you throw see where your hands are. If they are only a few inches from the bag than your pulling them back manually.

I don't understand your question about poor or good advise but is very important to pull punches so that you can set up flurries and combo's, it's simply not true that pulled punches when thrown right are less powerful than pushed punches.

I think if you have to pull your punches back you have pathetically weak and slow punches. Also I think judging by the high level of views regarding this question and the lack of responses, it shows that not many people know how to punch with any degree of competency.

By pull I mean retract the arms back after they have gone out using teh arms or back muscles. Not pull as in a punch should be a pulling motion not a pushing motion.(which it should if you know how to punch)

good advice in terms of fundamentals. pull back, ready to defend again.
                  but not 100% always true:
                  -keep out to keep distance
                  -"cntrol" opponent's head.

as for why ur punches "snap back automatically", are you punching a heavy bag?
shadow box, pull them back "manually"

Any time I punch be it in thin air or on the bag.

Ive come to realise that both methods are fine and there are MANY ways to throw a boxing punch. Not just 1.
