  • Newbie. Please Evaluate My Heavy Bag Work (Video)

Ok so I'm still super new to boxing and haven't had any formal training. Basically I'm just messing around on my own. Please watch a quick video on my heavy bag work and please provide some constructive criticism, I know there will be a ton. If there happens to be anything that looks decent that would be nice to know too. Link below

It is dangerous to ask such a question. Y may get LOTs of criticism, get discouraged and quit already at the stage of hitting the bag, not even sparring or competing.

Better take couple short videos of stance and movements while keeping the stance, slow execution of basic punches, some shadowboxing. These are more specific questions.

Well you weren't lying when you said you were a newbie

Is there any gyms with good trainers you can join to learn proper technique? There's a lot to work on to be honest, but everybody has to start somewhere. Do you shadowbox often? I think you really need to work on technique and disregard power/speed for a minute until you get the punches down. There's more qualified posters here to give you advice/constructive criticism but all I can say is join a gym if you're up for it and keep us all posted on your progress.

Unless you're planning on fighting midgets you need to start throwing the shots to the head at your head height. Aim for the top of the silver-strip on the bag.

Also sometimes when you move around you do it too relaxed, move like you would if you were in the ring and keep the feet moving fast.

Put your shoulders, hips and legs into the shots as well, you seem to only be using your arms which is why your straight shots are lacking in power.

I appreciate your enthusiasm and your will to improve, It takes a lot of guts to post a video when you're a newbie.

            1... Keep your hands up
2... Are you doing body work? Cause your punches are crazy low, unless you're 9 feet tall. If you are doing body work, rethink your combos, because those are going to get you KTFO.
3... Tuck your chin, (getting your punches up higher, will assist in this greatly)
4... Treat the Bag like a real person, you need to be evading and moving and be defensive when you're not punching.
5.... Get your body into those punches

That's probably a good start for now, work on those things then post another video, get to a boxing gym if possible, its very difficult to learn over the interwebs.

You need to start with the basics...

              1. You keep your chin tucked well, but when you're in stance, your hands are below your chin. Get them up! Your hands stay low even when you're throwing punches. You jab from your stomach and at stomach level, and bring your jab hand BACK at stomach level. This is a HORRIBLE habit you HAVE to break and the first sign of a newbie.

              2. Slow down! Bring your punches back to your chin before you throw the follow up punches. You have good snap on your punches, but you need to bring them back to home (your chin in a proper stance). Punch literally at half the speed you're going in this video until you get the technique right, then add speed and power.

              3. Learn to move! You walk around the bag literally like you're taking a stroll. You should just practice jabbing the bag and circling the bag with proper footwork over and over again.

You really need to teach yourself the basics tho before spending much time on the bag...

              1. Stance
              2. Guard
              3. Foot movement

              Then punches...

Once you get those things down...then you need to learn to move and punch WITH the bag...don't just wait for the bag to swing to you then punch. Get your feet out the mud...but you have bigger fish to fry...
