  • Heart rate during exercise safe?

I went to the gym today and was doing assorted exercises. While spinning i checked my heart rate and it was 180 bpm...what is a safe range as that sounds a little high to me?

That would be flat out max for a guy in his early 20's...so unless you had your foot to the floor and the sweat was dripping off of you I'd say it was high...but OK if that was/is your case. If say you are 21...and NOT working flat out and your heart rate was that high it would suggest that you are out of shape...but that should adjust over time with steady exercise.

I am 31. I was barely sweating but i was spinning at a vigorous pace, two notches under my fastest possible. With this new info should i be concerned still?

You were pretty much at 92-93% max heart rate for your age...190 being your max...if you were close to your max exercise output and you felt OK then I'd say nothing to be concerned over.

Sounds good, i am starting to exercise after almost two years of not surfing. I gained about 20 lbs and i guess its time to turn the mush into muscle. I feel better knowing that i wont give myself a heart attack in front of the hot girls in yoga pants

Your will make more sustained progress training in your Target HR Zone 50–85% - 95–162 beats per minute for longer periods of time...and throwing in some wind sprints at the upper ranges. I'm guessing that 180 bpm was not your average heart rate...that you took it while you had been sprinting some.

What is your resting heart rate?

No that's your blood pressure...take your pulse when you are relaxed and resting at night...like now.

That you didn't know that makes me think you took your heart rate on the bike off of it's heart rate monitor as opposed to you counting your pulse...if that's the case those heart rate monitors are not always that accurate...just so you know.

I will see 180BPM+ on hard runs/races. Perhaps the last 2 miles of a 10K race or even the last minute of a 1 mile race. But generally not in sprinting; where a person is unlikely to be running longer than a minute over say 400m and might not quite max out their heart rate in that time.

One thing to bear in mind is that warming up before sprinting at or near max is very wise. It helps prepare the body/heart and lungs for the shock that it will get. But the number is certainly not cause for concern.
