  • How to set up.....?

Sorry, dont know what its called, so ill try my best at explaining. Basically its a short straight shot from your lead hand, not a jab but a power shot.

The only times that come to mind where ive seen it, for instance, is the first knockdown in the pac-cotto fight. Pac did a straight left to cottos body and came over top with a lead right that knocked cotto down. Pac also did it against marquez in the last fight, hurt marquez pretty bad with it. Ive seen martinez do it, but cant remember where/agaibst who. So.....

Is that pretty much the only way to set it up? By going downstairs first? Its a shot i want to start working on and implementing in sparring. Help or advice prease, much appreciated...

The way you worded things made it seem confusing. Do you mean a straight hard jab or a straight shot from your power hand AFTER a jab?

Im a tard when it comes to explaining stuff. Say for instance, being an orthodox, i throw a jab upstaira followed by a right downstairs, and want to immediately follow up with a left back upstairs when im still inside. Its a short, powerful shot because of the torque your body creates.

Oh ok, Erik Morales LOVES this combination and it's a very basic one but very effective. I call it "changing levels".

It's basically setting up the power shot with the shot underneath, usually a jab or hook to the body.

It's a great way to land the big shot but you need to really sell it and throw it effectively to work. It's almost like a play action in football, you are selling something to do something else.

Try this one, I used it many times in my career and even got one of my best KO's with it.

Use the jab to the body, throw it nice and stiff right at the solar plexus. Keep throwing it and then feint it, throw the hard right hand up top followed by a nice left hook.

Really works well when you are landing a hard jab to the solar plexus.

Awesome, great advice man. Im always sparring much bigger men, always have to resort to jabs and power shots downstairs (when im not countering), im thinking this appraoch will work well with these guys. Its a pain to get inside, but once i do get inside i want to get their attention.

Just remember, you have to SELL the jab. Meaning you need to land it for at least a round or so. Don't show your cards early, throw it, throw it and then WITHOUT throwing it (just a hard feint) throw the hard right hand up stairs and then follow with a left hook.
