  • A Boxing training Story "Don't Box yourself In"

Story: So once I trained in LA with some "great" names in boxing. We use to have a trainers meeting everyday at the crack of dawn. I hated these meetings. The most unproductive meetings I have ever been apart of in my life. Mind you, it's me the young guy and well known veterans I won't name. 1 particular day I got fed up. We were discussing how to build a champion via training. I started naming skills they should have. A former Olympic Gold Medalist and fellow co worker was killing me in the meeting. He said basically my answer was bs and all a fighter needs is heart. Of course I responded with plenty of fighters with heart get their ass whooped. Finally after this debate a consultant(wtf) comes to me after the meeting and says "Barry, your right but he is a Gold medalist" Basically telling me to defer to him... Um.....needless to say that was not the program for me as a trainer. I'm about winning not politics. After I leave this program, I'm told the guy is now using my techniques that were literally laughed at.. So my point is, I have a real low tolerance for old people that think they are smart because of their age when it comes to teaching.

Moral of the story. Listen to your coach but still watch fights analytically and keep an open mind.

In a nutshell, can you describe to us briefly what type of techniques you wanted to employ as a trainer that you were scoffed at for bringing up

That was not really the point.

you never realize how ignorant old people are until you mature yourself. Some old people are the exact same person they were at 25.

heart plays a massive..massive role however. You don't have to be taking a beating to have heart.

It certainly is when you are bringing up an argument of which techniques are better, one from a gold medalist and one who trained next to some great names.

Maybe its not the "point" per se, but I think its still a good question.

my main teaching is footwork, footwork, footwork...and the jab....everything else just makes boxing fun....heart def is a key but like Barry said...can get ur ass whooped more times than none..need the skill to go w it..but it takes heart to gain those skills as the dedication to boxing has to be enormous to compete well

Barr, are you training with any notable professional boxers right now? If so, who?....

I understand where you guys are coming from

Any information you want on me can be found on my profile pg as I'm careful not to "advertise" or resume post according to the rules. I really like most of the coaches and young amateurs on here that I met on BoxingScene. This is a great website. I come from a military school of thinking. So I will humbly say if my story offended anyone I apologize.

See you guys on other threads and of course those who I met here and have communication with via FB and YT, Happy New Year and Talk to you soon.
