  • Jab,Cross,Uppercut

Having a huge problem commiting to the uppercut in this combo any suggestions? I think I'm about timid about opening up.
    Anyone else have this problem?

I'd rather use a hook after that cross, and then the uppercut. It is more standard but comes more naturaly.

So from my own southpaw stance, jab, left cross right hook, left uppercut. As you bring back your right (left) you pivot better on the uppercut putting more power in it than if you'd have to use it after the cross.

      Uppercut combos

The best combo is jab, cross, hook, uppercut.

Or depending on how close you are: hook, uppercut.

Remember, the uppercut should only be used when you are in close or it will be easily countered over. This is how Holyfield kayoed Buster Douglas. Douglas threw a long sloppy uppercut and paid for it.
James Toney used a right hook to the body followed by right uppercut to the head.

Cooney used a left uppercut pretty good. Watch his fight against Lyle on YouTube. Watch Tyson's fights he had a great right uppercut.

        Assuming you are orthodox...

You could try stepping forward and to the LEFT as you throw your right hand.

As you do this your head will move to the outside of your opponents right hand - he will not be able to hit you with it. Also, if you keep your right hand against you chin / rib, the right side of your body is protected from his left hand (remember - this is the only hand he can hit you with).

If anything is unclear let me know.

My left hook is ****, so I like throwing the left uppercut instead. I think it's my favourite punch to land solid.

I also like the hook as my go to, but I want to add this to my bag of tricks. I just want to be able throw every punch in the game you know.

Upper cuts in a combo..I Know it a popular in practice but the best opportunities for an uppercuts are often after a combo Either your own or your opponents. You see the Opening and take a deliberate one off punch to exploit it..Still a classic trailer in a combo but I wouldn't depend on making that opening just appear..I would looke for it and be ready with a well practiced powerful blow.I practice one off Uppercuts a lot..To minimize telegraphing and maximize power..Plus I love making that uppercut bag bounce up like a balloon.

The straight > left uppercut or left uppercut > straight is a very common combo that Juan Manuel Marquez throws.

I agree with everyone else in here in saying that it's better to sneak in uppercuts during a combo and in close range.

try jab, uppercut then hook as a slight alteration. It works well if you've backed someone into the ropes and it might feel more natural for you.
Keep the uppercut tight, but also long if you are throwing it when they are on the ropes.....
