  • WEIGHTS! please help.

    WEIGHTS!

    Are they good for boxing?
    if so, how much & what type of movement?

    I'm really confused when it comes to this.

    You want to hinder your speed, provoke injury, and bulk up with unnecessary muscle have at it.

      If you want to be weak and have zero power, don't use weights.

      I'm curious how does lifting a weight for strength increase injury? Stronger muscles equal less injury prone.

      And unnecessary muscle? Whatever that means cannot make sense. No one said to bodybuild but building strength can make a good fighter a great fighter!

        john l sullivan never used more then 4 lb weights to train......and he was soooooooo weak with absolutely no power.......same with fitzsimmons reccomending no more then 2 lb weights for boxing and he was one of the weakest punchers ever...........and given how weak joe louis was i really doubt he ever used weights either......

        weights are good for boxing if you use them once to twice a week idealy youd want to do things like squats for your legs weighted sit ups trunk twists russian twists for your core and something to work your back and shoulders.

        really lifting heavy weights way too much creates an over abundzance of fast twitch muscle mass whcih hinders kinetic linking, fine motor skills like punching and blocking , stamina, and speed. it also causes you to spend much more time stretching which if you dont spend the extra time stretching you end up injuring your self because of a lack of range of motion.

          Heavy Compound and Olympic Lifts. I'd say 3 days a week is plenty.

                What do you mean by weights?

                Boxing gloves, medicine ball, sledgehammer, your bodyweight, resistance bands, sandbags, logs, metal weights?

                Anything can be a weight. Weights themselves are not bad for you, nor is being stronger. Nothing wrong with lifting if it's done correctly. You can develop some freaky power and still be a skinny lil mofo.

                  Thanks for elaborating SS, to add to the list Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali refused to lift weights as well, Tyson did squat a lot tho, and began bench and curls and other dumbass weightlifting regimens during and after jail.

                  to the rest of the dumbasses in this thread stick to Flex and Muscle Man magazines, and remove yourself from a boxing website

                    You are the dumbass associating any type of weight training regimen with bodybuilding.

                    Just because Ali, Dempsey, Louis or some ancient boxer didn't use weights and was successful doesn't mean that goes for everyone.

                    Furthermore, there have been advances in strength training practices over the last 50-60 years. Sadly, boxing is the only sport that is still stuck in the times of Rocky where downing raw eggs is the only way to eat them to ensure you get all the nutrients, and the only way to workout is doing bodyweight exercises for hundreds of reps, or chewing pine tar somehow made you take a better punch.

                    You don't know ****. Stop giving out advice before you get someone hurt.
