Agreed. Why do I see all this crap about starting too late? You're 17 YEARS OLD kid!!! People say that's too late because they always stop training and take months off in between. Don't stop and train your heart out and you can do whatever you want to do in the sport!

In training for a fight I wouldn't recommend it but once a month it's probably okay. To be honest, while it isn't good, I know a number of fighters who compete and win at a high level who go out drinking most weekends, only easing up if they have a fight planned or a few weeks out of a tournament or whatever.

alcohol produces severe dehydration which increases risk of muscle injury, muscle wasting and decreases apetite. it will slow reaction time, mental acuity and hand eye coordination. this usually last for 3-4 days.

chronic or binge drinking leads to long term damage. it affects muscle mass, injury recovery and athletic performace alot. alcohol also increases fat storage and produces weight gain. its not only empty acalories but it changes your whole methabolism.

alcohol also lessens blood clotting which makes your face more vulnerable to swelling and cuts (look at hatton, cotto and taylor).

chronic alcohol use also leads to depression since it shrinks the brain and kills brain cells in the frontal lobes which controls judgement and cognitic function. it affects the back of the brain even worse, which is the part that controls balance and coordination.

it has also been proven fighters that drink are far more likely to become punch drunk since headshots and alcohol has a additive effect in destroying brain cells.

alcohol is also extremely harmful to the nerve system which further decreases balance. when u walk, run or stand you brain tells your feet where you want to go and your feet tell your brain the surface they are standing on. if the peripheral nerves in your feet are damaged or killed you are automaticly of balance, which is why drunks struggle to walk in a straight line.

alcohol also wears down your body which causes you to age as an athlete prematurely (look at hatton, taylor and cotto).

alcohol is a drug, never underestimate that even though its legal. the only reason it is legal is that it became a part of our culture so long ago, but if it was invented today theres no doubt it would be illegal. not only is it a drug but its a quite heavy one. much heavier than cannabis, LSD and exstacy for example, very similar to ******* acctually. just a bit less dangerous in all areas but very similar. like i said if alcohol didnt go so far back in our society it would be illegal.

these are all facts. its my personal opinion alcohol use might also affect a fighters long term ability to take a punch. theres no science to this but i think it makes sense considering the way alcohol damages the brain wears down your body, and there are several fighters (again look at hatton, taylor and cotto) that this fits aswell.

bottom line is u cant become a good fighter without sacrificing a bit of your social life, exactly how much differs from person to person though. at the end of the day its up to you, you wouldnt be the first to drink something away.

Most of what assassin said is correct, except I really don't understand how alcohol is similar to *******? One is a stimulant, the other a depressant for starters.

Dude, remember, you don't have to get completely wrecked whenever you go out drinking, if you want to drink every 2nd weekend or so and box, just get tipsy or moderately drunk. Thats the best kind of drunk anyway, where you are having fun, getting a buzz, but aren't completely ******ed and unable to walk properly or talk coherently. Getting really drunk can lead to vomiting and stuff which is just ****in gross.

when u talk about how dangerous drugs are u usually divide it into four categories.

              - brain damage
              - damage to the rest of the body
              - risk of overdose
              - addictiveness

in all four of these areas alcohol and ******* are almost identical. like mentioned ******* is just a bit worse in all categories, but they are more similar than any two other drugs out there.

i say this bcuz most ppl assume alcohol is a relatively safe drug since its legal, but that isnt the case at all.

cannabis, LSD and exstacy are light drugs. all much less dangerous than alcohol in every category. then there are heavy drugs like heroin and meth, alcohol doesnt belong there either. it belongs inbetween, with amphetamine and *******. ******* being the most similar.

Drinking alcohol effects people in different ways. Depends on your constitution. If I go on a night out drinking, I cannot perform near my optimal levels for at least 2-3 days after. Other people I know can get up the next morning and run 6miles plus or do a full workout in the gym no problem.

University is to be enjoyed. If you dont plan on having a professional career be sensible. Eat right, do your excercise and go out and have fun.

there is a difference between drinking alcohol and doing a Ricky Hatton on it in offseason. He was drinking 10+pints of Guinness afew times a week and eating fast food, blowing up to 170 punds + and then forcing his body to drop back down to 140lbs which was insane.

The reason I mentioned constitution is that everybody is diffferent, and Im Irish so we consume levels of alcohol that would probably kill another so best thingt to do is test yourself.

Drinking is a question of optimization. Por exemplo, cutting out alcohol in your case won't make a huge difference, because you're a newb and are gonna improve rapidly no mater what you do.

Now 10 years down the line and you're trying to get into title contention, and you're kind of plateauing in your efforts, that would be the time to maybe stop getting suckered in by drugs, alcohol, and sex with women, mmkay?

In other words, it won't make a substantial difference until your skills are up to a higher level.

Why drinking is enjoyable, aside from obvious reasons:

                  1. Going to the gym hungover is great punishment and makes you a better person.

                  2. Going to the gym drunk, see above X2.

                  3. Nothing like a nice 40 or two after a hard training session.

                  4. Having low bodyfat makes it easier to get drunk. Being dehydrated/starved does too. Therefore, boxers can get drunk way super fast, which will save you big cashmoney in college.

But yeah...I've only run into a handful of low-level boxers who don't drink.

drinkin will mess your training up completly, even if you make it to the gym you aint guna beable to give it your all. Depends what you want, if your a keep fitter then dont realy matter, your just guna be damageing your health. If your serious about boxing then your wasteing your time if your drinkin every week, cos someone else out there will make the sacrifices, and work there ass off whilst ur pissed up.
