You can drop the long-distance running altogether if you replace it with swimming. From my own personal experience , swimming is a better stamina builder than long-distance runnin'.
I use to be a member of a swim club and my long-distance running times improved much faster than if I would've just kept on jogging. Swimming improves your lung capacity much better than running does and less impact on the body.
