You can drop the long-distance running altogether if you replace it with swimming. From my own personal experience , swimming is a better stamina builder than long-distance runnin'.

I use to be a member of a swim club and my long-distance running times improved much faster than if I would've just kept on jogging. Swimming improves your lung capacity much better than running does and less impact on the body.

jogging maybe, but not running. Running builds that long term stamina. Do only HIIT and you won't have the stamina down the line. Like most MMA fighters.

It won't eat at your muscle as long as you keep eating enough proper foods.

I dont lift weights (although I do a lot of bodyweight stuff) but I eat a big ass protein shake after jogging/running because if I dont I literally waste away due to my ******ly fast metabolism.

I guess jogging 10 miles plus...routinely will eat your muscles a bit but 3-6 miles should be ok. I think mixing in HIIT workouts, sprints, and jogging is a better thing to do than just one out of the three. I don't see how one can make weight without jogging

there's a flaw in the questions. why are you trying to build bulky muscles for boxing? it seems to me that you are probably doing MMA or something that requires more muscle structure.

if that is the case, you could make an argument for excluding long distance jogging.

Long runs are useful for building base cardio, and making weight. As for real in-ring fitness in the amateurs, they aren't that helpful.

Currently, I'm fighting 3x2 min rounds (junior) and my fitness is pretty good, and I'm running 3-4 times per week, with 3 of those runs sprints/intervals, and if I do 4 one of them is a longer run for maintaining weight etc

When fighting 2 min rounds, your main focus with running is the sprints. When you are a senior and fighting 3 mins, a longer run (say 2 or 3 miles) run at a very fast pace with a few sprints mixed in is best.

why get rid of long cardio? why would you wanna gas after 1 mile?
LISS: low intensity steady state cardio is the best for overall cardiovascular health and overall fitness.

HIIT is great for sport specific workouts

You should do both since your body adapts to your training regimen anyways. If you're already in shape and want to save time, I would say do more HIIT than Jogging, like 4/3 or 5/2. If you're trying to get into shape, intially, you should be jogging more, to get your body and legs strong, then eventually evening it out. But yeah if you don't keep eating, your body will burn muscle for fuel.

Basically what I do is HIIT/Jogging every other day, Ab/strength every other day, and then bike/swim every other day. It seems like the most full body training regimen I have access to.
