For those of you that have seen some of my vids of random shadowboxing and hittin the bag, I have finally joined a gym hah and this is to explain how its been going so far. First off, unfortunately its not a boxing gym because we dont really have any out here in the bay at least that is remotely close to me so its the next best thing being an MMA gym teaching BJJ/Grappling and Muay Thai. Boxing is still my first love and im only doing Muay Thai because its something to do and I want to train.
On my first day last Friday we did some pad work for an hour and that went pretty well. I ended up with a nickel sized blister on the ball of my right foot which is awesome.
Second day which was monday we did some pad work for the first hour then sparred for the 30 mins after. I put a lot into our hour of training and when when were doing reaction drills i ripped a new blister about the size of a quarter right under my ****en right big toe YAY! I was doing the rest of the drill with my weight someone on the right edge of my foot which caused my calf to get extremely tired. So sparring came and i told myself to suck it up and just get in there because im finally getting a chance to spar. So this guy was about and inch or so taller then me and was a bit round so he had about 30-50lbs on me(im 5'7-8 145-150lbs) so the first minute was taking it easy and just throwing some basic easy combos to feel it out. Since im still getting used to using angle in sparring i have a tendency to back straight up when i get overwhelmed with combos so when he backed me up thats the only time he really threw. I thought he was gonna hit a lot harder especially with his extra weight but he didnt hit very hard. After a minute went by i got in the zone where you just got that look in your eye where youve got intense concentration and was feinting and caught him a few times with a feint then a snappy jab or a quick lead straight. So then i threw a hard low kick and my right calf tenses up for a quick second and almost cramps and that just ****s up my rhythm. for the rest of the round i try to throw some combos but stay more so on defensive because the blister is getting super raw and my right calf on the blister side was killin me. I couldnt spar on that foot anymore so i was out for the rest of the rounds. I felt very disappointed.
Day 3 wednesday i felt good. I taped up my blister and spots for possible new ones to prevent it. Pad work again for the first hour then sparring after. I end up opening up my first blister again ****en great but its bearable. Sparring comes around and im just praying that it doesnt bother me as much and luckily it was just annoying and didnt really start to impair sparring until the last 2 ish rounds. Over all with this being my second day sparring i feel im doing good.
Overall my technique starts looking real bad because doing the sparring after that hour of training really drains me especially since i havent been conditioning. I do my best to be on the offensive and not turtle up when taking combinations. Because i gas i start ducking down my head because it gets difficult to concentrate and keep my eyes forward but i will be working my conditioning. One thing that was cool when we were sparring is when i had to spar this solid 6'1 guy. Since he was in shape he was probably like 170-180ish lbs. I was trying to move in on the counters from jabs and such and move in when he would try to kick because this fool had range. about halfway through i started a rhythm you could say somewhat like pacquiao how he slips side to side while he's moving around and it helped a whole lot. He would miss a jab and i would come straight back in with my jab or a 112 to get close. It was fun sparring against this guy and testing out trying to get arond his range.
The Aftermath: 2 Blister 1 Opened Twice, to the touch and visual bruising on my left temple close to my eye socket, my forehead is bruised to the touch, left leg hurts from not checking this 1 kick i should have and it hurt real bad and its my fault for not checking it, and the balls of both my feet are sore.
3 days and im having a good time. Im doing a lot better then i thought i would when taking shots because i dont shutdown. Ill turtle for a second or so but then push out of it and throw some punches or kicks to break the habbit. Going to get my conditioning on harcore style so i can stay more relaxed during sparring and not worry about gassing out and fighting on my last tank for 5-6 rounds hah.
