  • Why did you start Boxing? (and my introduction)

Why'd you start boxing? For me, I started boxing just to see how I could do. I never got my ass kicked and had been in 14 street fights, (big guys get tested more than smaller guys) every time someone would test me I learned very young to make an example out of that person. So I thought why not apply it to my favorite sport, the sport I always had the most respect for. Boxing...

I know alot of ppl here don't really know me or my background except j knows a lil bit but I felt like sharing it because this is really the only site I frequent here lately. I don't see alotta guys posting intros so here goes.

So I roll around downtown B.R. looking for the place I found in the phonebook. There was another gym, that was more expensive called Gladiators, and they had a good trainer named Frankie Caruso who is an olympian and has great amateur credentials. I just didn't wanna go because I felt more of an MMA vibe. And when I rolled by the place there was a bunch of guys in gis.... I was like **** this (no disrespect, I respect eastern martial arts to great extent. ChosonNinja on youtube has some badass videos look him up- plus theres a guy here that posts named 'j' that's given me alot of good advice on training and I'm pretty sure he's into some kind of martial art. Anyway, moving on..I finally found the place, after stopping and asking a guy where this gym was, and he replied, in a half drunk accent, 'hey whiteboy you dont need a boxin gym u can find a fight right here' lol, I rode out ...Never have been one to look for trouble, lol...Anyway, I finally found the place...the coach, an old black guy named DC, (who I later learned threw a chair at a judge in court lol) that had no front teeth, looked at me and told me to come back at 6, which was 3 hours later.

At first, it was a temporary thing, the boxing. In a month, I sparred the gyms best prospect...less than 6 months later he stopped coming around, it wasn't because of me though..I think it was his girlfriend, but I don't know for sure. But it's Baton Rouge. We are not known for producing great boxers. Clifford Etienne is our latest piece of work. He was a decent hw. Everyone rips on him, but Clifford was a good pro and I respect his work inside the ring. If I had started in say, San Antonio, I likely would've had to deal with much tougher opposition outta the gate. I kept sparring whoever they'd bring around, and never lost. I know they say nobody wins or loses in sparring. I disagree with that statement, unless two guys are 'just working' on a particular move or someone's wearing a body shield, etc etc. This chick I was dating starting doing ******* and ****, so I dumped her. But I loved her, and it really hurt me. I started drinking and quit boxing about two months after that. I am just now getting started again, this was two years ago. I've been working at a company that locates and constructs underground communication lines pretty much since I quit. I've stayed in shape, and maintained some kind of regimen for the last 3 months. But after I broke up with my ex gf, I was a mess. I was drinking 12-14 beers a day. a DAY. I blew up to 322 lbs. No ****. I went from 245 to 322. (6 ft 4in) About six months ago I made a decision to stop what I was doing, because I was becoming an alcoholic.

The one thing I was ever passionate about was boxing. I figured, since I never had been knocked out or even hurt in the ring, and beat up everyone I sparred with, it might be worth it to really take it seriously. Now I'm with a much, much less worldly girl. Also, she can't take my **** four times in a night, like my skank ex could. That's good for a fighter. At least, for me. I need testosterone to maintain a good training schedule. If I nut four times in a day, I feel more bumlike the next day. shrug...Busting one daily is fine, but I'd rather wait two days. My current gf is sore after a nice pounding, after that I can't even touch her for two days. Alright, alright..enough of that...lol..but my point is, now I feel like I got my hands up. My eggs are in a basket that I know, for sure, will never screw me over like my ex did with the drugs..She was a ****** when I met her, (felt the hymen break.) totally against all drugs, pot, pills, anything and everything and rarely even drinks. Never goes out, studying to be a teacher. So with her on my arm I'm thinking about seriously giving it another shot. But taking it real, real serious. I've been training my ass off lately, getting myself back into fighting condition. Because it's time for Kid Dynamite to make history...

cool, good luck you post some pretty good stuff.

Oh, I'm from Pasadena CA, 24 years old. I did a bunch of ****, went to school, tried different stuff. Always had a really strong feeling that there had to be something more to life, just didn't feel close to satisfied with anything I was doing. Finally found boxing, knew pretty fast that it was exactly what I was looking for.

I started from absolute zero about a year ago. Hadn't gotten off the couch in like 2 years. I've made a ton of progress in a year but still suck lol. Still working though of course. 6'1 about 200 pounds right now.

Alright ill give it a shot. When i was younger I did 4-5 years of shotokon karate. i stopped my first year high school and didnt really do much sports or anything. My second semester out of high school i learned to weight lift by working out with my 2 friends in college for a semester and now that is always going to be apart of my healthy lifestyle. I lift for strength and lean muscle and not huge muscles that i dont need. 2-3+ years ago i started watching the ultimate fighter season 1 and it got me into mma. before that i couldnt watch a full boxing match to save my life. i thought it was the most boring **** next to baseball. so maybe 2 years ago i started taking muay thai because hey i loved doing karate so i started muay thai and it was fun for a bit. I didnt really learn much except barely any basics for the time i was there. During that time i got into this anime(japanese cartoon) call Hajime No Ippo which is about boxing. It showed me the basics of boxing and the story really kept in interested. So i started doing research and watching videos and such and i started to learn. I picked the the mechanics of punching very very quickly just on my own. I took the different styles i loved to watch and put them together to make somewhat my very own style. I would say I would know more then the average joe who decided to take up boxing for fun and has been training for a year 3 days or more a week. I have yet to train at a formal boxing gym because of the MMA boom prices are ridiculous. There are 2 gyms downtown but they start class at around 5-6 and traffic begins at 2-3pm and ends sometimes passed 8-9pm so that is a predicament. I love the sweet science of boxing even more then i love mma and im still pretty young and hope to get in there and test myself in the ring sometime formally because i have sparred with friends that have trained in boxing.

I started boxing cause i did two years of kick boxing and in all the guys of my gym, i had the better hands and almost never used the kicks. So i finally started boxing in March and had a hard time at the beginning, i worked, improved and i'm still learning everyday. I had a gym vs gym fight which i won and i will start to compete in the amateurs for real, next season.

The reason why i do it is because it's my favourite sport and i want to be a world champion one day. I need also to be rich cause my family was always poor and we still have money problem.

dont think u should blame your ex for quitting. boxing is all about individualism, most ppl in boxing have there fair share of problems. u leave it out of the gym. doing well in sparring doesnt mean all that much. until u fight, u aint a fighter. good luck though. i would love to see some footage of u sparring.

Because it's the hardest combat sport for me to do. MMA is the easiest. Kickboxing/Muay Thai and Wrestling is about moderate.

Not for the reasons you may think. Boxing is hardest for me because all I can use is my hands, its restricting me from using what has been drilled into my subconciousness since pre-school. That's why it is the hardest and everything else is easier.

                    ohh and my own story..

i was always a nice kid, but i always liked fighting. alot of ppl advised me to start some form of combat sport but i didnt, at the time i was all about football. as i grew older i tried lots of diffrent sports, but never any form of combat sport. age 14 i got sick of football, started a new school around the same time where i met friend who boxed. i had always been intrigued with boxing even though i never tried it. i asked him some questions and he was happy to answer. i started doing my own research. starting out with tyson and ali, i would watch meaningful HW fights thru the whole history of boxing. i downloaded some beyond the glory docs. RJJ, leonard and DLH. started following their careers by watching there entire fights. i found out about the fantastic 4 and watched all the fights. the moment i first saw duran fall to the canvas from that brutal right hand, i was sold on boxing. by this time i just wanted to learn more. i found an all time p4p list and checked the top guys out. finding out about hearns was the first big step to making me a boxing fan, robinson was the second. from age 14 i spent hours trying to learn about boxing. i remember the first big fight i watched that was a current event. hopkins-taylor 1. some mightve lost interest after that fight, but not me. i understood BHop was doing things in there, doing things that bothered the faster, stronger and younger taylor. but i didnt understand what. i studied boxing like crazy to understand the sweet science. hours and hours of watching tapes to understand the craft hopkins applied.

****** as i was i had thought 14 was too late to start boxing. but by the time i turned 17 i couldnt help myself. if nothing else i will get a deeper understanding by stepping in the ring myself, i will know what its like. i did it, and loved it. i started training like crazy, never missed a session. my love for the sport caught the eye of my trainer and he quickly gave me more attention. i evolved quickly and within 6 months started competing.

as a boxer i shaped myself after my favourte fighters. hearns, robinson, ali, bhop, arguello, meldrick taylor etc... im tall 6'3 & 1/2, fight at 152, started fighting at 141. very tall for my weight, so i use the jab alot. love to put punches togheter. hit HARD. still inexperienced and flawed though. but im working on it. my greatest strenght according to my trainer is my boxing IQ, he recognized i studied the game alot before i even stepped foot in the gym, without me telling him.

as far as my future goes im looking to fight after the summer, at 152 for the first time. been inactive so im very much looking forward to it.
