What do you look for in a boxing gym? (ideally)

    the coach at my gym lets most frequent users train for free, he just loves producing good boxers.
    The gym is a shack really, very old school but has a great feeling to it. Bags are well worn, creaky flooring and walls but its ace.

      I seemed to have recently gotten lucky. My new coach isn't ****y, at all. But he's sadistic, which is a good thing in my opinion.

      The guy has a military background, not sure what his fight record was but I can tell he boxed, (Anyone who's boxed can tell another fighter when they see one) the guy is not ****y but pushes you HARD, to your limits...and if you quit on a drill, he just makes you look like a ***** by yelling stuff like "BOY IF YOU QUIT HERE, YOU GONNA QUIT IN A FIGHT!!!!" I had to quit during a punchout drill and during some abwork on my 2nd day back, I simply reached muscular/lung fatigue and couldn't handle it...He was like, PATRICK, WHATS YOUR PROBLEM? "...im tired coach..." ....."DEAL WITH IT!" he says...I like the guy, I found my new ****in' home.


      They got some toughs in there, but none of em are in my weight class. I'm actually the best Heavyweight at that gym who currently trains there, although I know there are others in my state like Quantis Graves (Cut Off, La. - lost to Deontay Wilder in olympics) that would abso ****ing lutely annihilate me since I haven't trained in 2 years due to hand surgeries. He's not a big HW like me, but he's a short, compact, slick guy who knows how to fight.....Trust me, he's a good boxer.

      We got a guy by the name of Tommy here, he is probably the best conditioned athlete in the boxing gym. The first day I went, I saw him spar about 6 different guys, 2 rounds a pop. The only punches he really took were soft jabs, and when he smelled blood or turned it on at the 30 second mark, this mother****er would TURN IT ON and drive home hard shots mixing them in really nice...Uppercuts when he would see the openings followed by hard short compact hooks with the opposite ****ed hand, then he'd back away and reset...My goal is to get in the same shape as this Tommy guy...He's a black dude, and looks younger than me (I'm 25 and weigh 265, 6'4") he's about 5'11" tall and weighs around 175. Bad mother****er.

        Here's a video of my gym, posted by an amateur fighter out of baton rouge named Jason, (The asian dude in the video.) I have no idea what the black guy's name is, but I can tell you one thing, he can skip some ****ing rope. Jason is good with the bodywork here...He puts the Tszyu mix on this brutha but the brutha has superior timing, reflexes and speed. Great work by both guys, though.



        Notice Jason is the only guy who threw a single body shot. The black guy's lead hand is way too low, imho. He should maintain a proper guard. Only a few gifted fighters on the planet, and/or super tall fighters with good hard jabs/triple jabs/double jabs should maintain a low lead hand like that......I gave it to the brutha, but good work by Jason....He's also in good shape...


        edit- ps- see that big black 250lb bag in the background? that's a bad mother****er. You can lay into it as hard as you can punch and it won't hurt your wrist or fist, at all...it's not super soft either....Perfect bag for a hw.

          When I was young there were lots of boxing clubs so you could pick and chose what you wanted. That was then, this is now. In today's world you have to take what is there because there ain't much available. Fortunately boxing is a sport in which expensive equipment isn't necessary. A good trainer can turn out some great prospects from a hole in the wall. Look at all the great boxers coming out of Mexico. You can't tell me they have the biggest and the best gyms in the world.

            yaeh this is true.... some of the best boxers in the world started off with nothing.....****ty equipment....crappy gym....the expensive and fancy equipment and gyms are just icing on the cake....

              Since I'm just beginning to become an actual boxer, I'm just looking for the best trainer possible to get smart. I watch a lot of videos, but it's kind of pointless in the sense that it's similar to a five year old listen to adults speak, you just lose yourself in the conversation.

                i love my gym even more so for the fact that i train at the same time as some of the pro's. it gives me an invaluable amount of experience and there's not as many people in the gym either so i don't have to wait on equipment to open up.

                  I joined my boxing gym because it was close to the university I study at. I attend class and then drive a couple minutes to the gym and work out. My gym has set hours, it's open like 2 hours a day, but that's good enough for me. I train 4 days a week at the gym and the days when the gym is closed I run and do calisthenics/core work at home or work out at the uni gym.

                  I like my gym because everyone there is really nice and easy going. The coaches are willing to work with anyone. They're not very strict, they let you decide how hard you want to work, but if you are just there to cause trouble or joke around they'll kick you out. The gym costs about $30 a month which I find pretty reasonable. There are some *******s there, but they're usually just ****y kids who don't last. They come sparingly or eventually quit after they get KTFO in the ring.

                  My one complaint is that there are too many young kids, like 13 and unders. They're so ****y and they don't work hard...I know I was like that when I was younger, but I wish there would be a separate time for the "older" guys to work out (I'm 20). There used to be two sessions, but they merged the sessions to save money. All the coaches are volunteers and the gym is partially state funded.
