Just started boxing and my right punch is alot stronger than my left which I use for the jab, is there anything I can do to improve the strength of my jab?
If you've just started boxing this might not have been explained to you... Keep your left hand forward and use your left hand to flick/distract/find distance etc. and keep your strong right hand for power shots.
There isn't anything wrong with improving your left hand strength of course, i need to do this because my left hooks suck ****, but it's normal to have one hand stronger than the other. I have found my left has increased in strength because i jab all the time with it.
If you've just started, focus on the technique and make sure you are throwing the punches correctly... but of course you can shaddow box with hand weights.. maybe one just in your left hand.
Don't worry about your lead hand being less powerful than your backhand, that's normal, that's why your lead hand is your lead hand. You know, that's why a classic combo is lead jab, lead jab, backhand. The lead is, as said above, a distance finder, a distractor, a set up and a point scorer. Big difference between the lead and backhand is in a lead jab you don't really transfer a great deal of energy from the ground, it's more like a spear. In a backhand shot your hips flick from sideways on to front on and then back alot like a whip, so it's not just about arm/shoulder etc. strength. However, just because your lead hand is usually weaker than your backhand, doesn't mean you can't strengthen it.
1) Practice the shot
2) Ensure good weight transfer is in motion. With a lead jab your left leg (orthadox) why bend in slightly but your hips wont twist.
3) Build your body. So many people think "punch = arm = lift a few weights" and then you have those super clever people who think a little deeper and go "punch = arm + shoulder = more weights"...Then a boxer thinks "punch = body = everything, from leg presses to tricep stretches to running".
Now, the importance of the power of the jab depends on how you fight. If you're an 'infighter' then it's not that important, if you're a "counter fighter" then it's quite important, if you're a "slugger" then it's really not important and if you're an "out-fighter" then you want your jab to be excellent. It also depends on whether you're an "offensive" fighter, where the power of the jab isn't so important. For me, so far, I would say a jab is really nothing more than to distract them or set me up for a left hook or a backhand powershot.

Thanks
i had the same problem when i started but after about a month i noticed that it had become alot stronger. ive only been boxing for about 4 months now and my left is probably as strong as my right if not stronger!
If the difference is that big then maybe you should talk to your coach about switching to southpaw then. Your backhand should really be your strongest because they are usually, excluding the lead hook, the big shots.
