  • Hey guys, I picked out my equipment but still need some help...

New to boxing and I'm going to pick it up for the summer, then we'll see how it goes...

Any way for the equipment I've decided on:

    No Foul Protector:

    Sparring Gloves (14 oz.):

    Headgear:

I need help with the shoes and mouthguard.

For the shoes I wanted some that are Reebok and high tops the ones that look like pro wrestling, that are really high come up mid shin I think old school ones, not low tops. What do you recommend?

For the mouthguard I heard you can go to the dentist to get a mold of your teeth and have a mouth guard made like that, very interested in this option.
    What do you recommend?

Anything else from what I picked out would be appreciated.

I know it will be a while before I'm able to spar with anyone but this is what I've decided on. Or if you think I should just buy a few things then see how that goes, those comments would be appreciated too! If you suggests other equipment please comment on it and provide links to it if possible.

somebody is bound to say it, so i guess i'll just say it first.

don't buy any of that stuff yet. wait until you're at the gym for awhile and comfortable with everyone. see what everyone else is using, what size gloves, what kind of headgear, etc. try out some different companies' stuff at your gym before you drop a few hundred on gear.

get boxing shoes and wraps if you really feel like you need to show up with some new stuff. in all honesty sneakers, shorts and a t shirt is all you need at first.

Before joining my gym I got a mouthpiece and gloves for the punchbag. I haven't needed to buy anything else in the few months since then.

My gym has sparring gloves and headguards so yours might do too.

              Most of this is pointless, you wont need it for ages. When I first started I was the same, I went out and bought a punch bag, bought some wraps, bought some bag mitts, bought a skipping rope, had my eyes on a gum shield, headguard, sparring gloves, oh **** the list goes on and on but my dad just said the simple words "why now?" and I thought, good point. If you're going to start boxing in the summer here's what you need;

              Running trainers
Weights - not too heavy, no need to be too concerned about bulking up.

That's about it I guess. The rest you can do with bodyweight, I never knew how good bodyweight exercises were until I actually took up boxing.

You can buy a punch bag and some bag mitts if you want but don't try and box the bag, just punch it, or as my coach says "dig, dig, dig!" which just means smack hell out of it just for fitness and stamina.

As for headguards, sparring gloves, groin guards and all of that, you wont need those for atleast a month (recommended). Well, actually, you wont really need that stuff yourself until much longer when you start to get into competitions because usually your gym will have that stuff for you to use when you spar.

Trainers for training, I use everlast orlando or something like that, tight fit, move well, best work out trainers i've ever owned and they're not too expensive (normal trainer price, about £35). As for ring shoes, again, just leave that for a while.

Gum shield - get a good one, you can get them for about £3 which you put in hot water and you mould or they can go up to £20-30, or you can go to the dentists and get a custom made one, the latter being very expensive. I would say just buy a good one, if you don't have the money then buy ****ter trainers or something, a gum shield is much more important and I think it's always overlooked.

I've never used this make so i'll mention it and hopefully others will talk about them, but they're called 'blitz'. I was recommend them by a coach at my gym. Lonsdale are actually pretty crap. My trainers by them are incredibly hard to run in, my foot just slaps the floor so I bought some everlast ones and now use my lonsdale ones as just piss around ones, my mitts by them have torn abit (but they were comfortable and well filled) and my wraps by them are, in retrospect, pure ****.

Sparring gloves are good for bag work when you want to increase endurance however, I was told not to use them on the bag until i've done more training (i'm still reasonably new) because using 14/16 oz. gloves to learn with will increase stamina but A) they're much more expensive than mitts and when they wear down cost much more to replace and B) it can teach you to box slowly. So, gloves look cool, but start out with bag mitts.

for a custom mouth guard go to www.customguards.com same thing a dentist makes for alot less. Get the pro model first if you think you need more protection then order the elite the second guard is 50% off making the elite actually cheaper than their pro model if you order it second.
