  • Gym Bully...

So my gym has a bully and I imagine each one of you guys has one of these as well. Hes about 6ft 220lbs solid muscle, big macho russian navy guy. He seems like a fairly nice guy but all he does it spar with all the little people and when he does he goes balls to the wall hard as he can winging haymakers. The first time i sparred him he came out swinging for the fences and i tried moving and counterng and then he hit me and it became a toe to toe fight which didnt work out to well for me, then at one point we ended up clinching where he tried to put a standing Gillotine on me(wtf??) which apparently hes done to other people. The 2nd time i sparred him i told myself all i was gunna do is stick and move and i tried that and it worked for the first half until he straight up tackled me into the ropes a started unloading shots. and it became a war once again whichi actualy faired better in but i took alot of shots to the back of the head, and decied to call it a night sparring wise. Thats his history with me...

I constantly see him asking to spar people smaller than him or people who just started and then last week one of the other heavies asked if he wanted to work on some slipping drills and such with him so he didnt wear headgear because he wasnt expecting much.....but the guy didnt clue in and went all out and head butted him...multiple times..

Im just asking tho...what do you guys do with people like this in your gym, and who actualy more or less refuse to spar more experienced or people his own size

I had a guy like that at my gym. He stopped coming around. I went to an all amateur gym and this guy was a 14-9 professional Tiger Survivor Taylor was his name, hed goto amateur gyms and ask to spar with all the good amateurs ...this guy would go 100pct though and hit hard, butted, etc. One time he butted me square in the nose and I retaliated by punching him square in the nuts, he had no cup, when he grabbed them grimacing in pain I followed up with a right hook on his cheekbone, sent him on ***** street. He stopped coming round after that. My advice is to punch the guy in the balls. Use golatas blueprint.

At my first gym there was a bully who all but ran the place. He rarely did the teamwork drills for warmups and mostly just slugged at the heavybag during skills practice. One day he's in the ring roughing up a guy when Ice Griffin came in to work out. If you've seen Griffin you know he's not large, not even close to tall, and not very heavy. Compared to Frank he's about 5 inches shorter and 30 pounds lighter, total mismatch right? Long story short Griffin took the bully to school and humiliated him so bad at one point we could hear Frank start to whine! A grown ass man doing cry baby stuff, the mark of a called out bully for sure. Frank settled down after that and was actually enjoyable to work with from time to time.

Obviously not every gym is going to have a Montell Griffin come in to save the day but it does underline one usually ignored tennet of dealing with bullies. They rarely respond to brute force shows of strength, when it comes to dealing with a hardcore push-you-around bully you MUST impose some humiliation and mental dominance. Physical rough house shows of strength may get the bully to leave you alone, but it will do little to help everyone else. Humiliating or humbling a bully in front of the peer group is what it takes to shape those guys up and get them in line.

My only other experience with bully behavior in the gym was taken care of before it had a chance to flourish. Coach Rivas (USAF boxing head coach) told all the competitors that he wouldn't stand for that **** right from the gate. If anything remotely close happened you were gone and he wouldn't ask questions, find out facts, etc, that was it you were out of the gym, off the team no BS.

If you don't have an observant coach who is seeing this bully behavior be sure to communicate it up the chain. Few things will destroy the quality of training time and the learning environment more than a bully.

Hey Kayo, what do the coaches do while this is going on?

At the two gyms I've been to I cannot remember a time when I've sparred without at least one of the trainers watching.

This guy sounds like a ****. Targetting those smaller than you isn't on. And anyone who heatbutts during training should be kicked out of the place. If ****ting in his shoes isn't a realistic possibility you should have a word with your coach (about having him removed/reigned in a bit, not about ****ting in his shoes. Unless you think you coach might be up for it)

There always has been and always will be bullies in the gym. Whoever the head coach is should be keeping track of it and making sure they can't do their worst. But sooner or later you have to learn how to deal with guys who are bigger and stronger. The coach should be teaching you how to do that too.
