                  every single week someone new comes to the gym and then we never see them again. I dont think people realise how difficult boxing is.

                    yeah people get like "oh im gunna be a boxer" come once and realizes it isnt them but say they learned enough to train on their own

                      I've talked about this before. Our gym is smack in the middle of our city's "hood," so we get a lot of these guys. And yes, we let them spar on the first day if they want. If they come in with a buddy they usually get paired up together; if they come in alone, a trainer gives them a few rounds of jab-only with someone who has excellent control and self-discipline.

                      Plus, as I've mentioned, our gym is run like a martial-arts class, with 30 minutes of calisthenics, 30 minutes on a drills circuit in 3-minute rounds, and then 30 minutes of contact drills and light-to-medium sparring with gloves, headgear, and mouthpieces. That takes a lot of the wind out of people's sails the first few times; most thugs and wannabes are in no shape to fight by the time they put on the headgear. Hell, 2 rounds of burpees and they're in no shape to swat a fly. A few weeks ago we had a guy walk out after about 45 minutes.
