just wondering if anybody had an answer or could point me in the right direction if this has been answered before.

But, what is the average length of a amateur career before turning pro?
Is there a certain amount of years that everyone usually tries to make the transition or is it based on your record?

I haven't even had an amateur fight yet, but I like to keep the long term goals in the back of my mind.....

    thanks

i have trained and sparred for 1 year, i have not had an amateur fight yet.. i have a subluxing shoulder. shame. so no training for me.

the gym is where you get your ass handed to you, the fight is where you fight without the mistakes.

its a hard game.. is it really worth being smacked in the head?

A good test IMO would be to compete on atleast a major natl scale with others in your weight class. This would test your skills and determination. Since to compete on that level you have to put forth some serious effort and commitment to the sport. I'd say 25-50 fights min in the AM's but I'm sure everybody would have there own pace and any advice giver would have their own idea of how to scale your ability in a Pro atmosphere. It's hard out there. Tons fight for years and never get a TV appearance or a paycheck that would cover the cost of training and time off work for training. It's a long hard road man. If you are good yeah it's worth it. But the odds of winning the lottery might be just as good as getting 5 mil fight contracts.

The need for amateur experience is contingent on your own individual style. A pure boxer needs more experience than a slugger, slimply because he has more things to learn. You also have to remember that professional boxing is about knockouts, consequenty the less firepower you have the more skill you need to get those knockouts. A simple guidline for the advisability of turning professional is your ability to get stop your weaker opponents early. If you can't do better than 50% KO ratio as an amature, chances are you won't do it as a pro either. Low KO ratios usually mean small paychecks, even when you are winning all your fights. Winning isn't good enough in professional boxing. You need to win and excite the fans as well.
