  • Sparring at a new GYM

I have not sparred in a while I'm new to this GYM they put me to spar with going 50% percent each but this other guy's is going 100% I'm like WTF is going on I though the trainer said 50 so I started going 100% also. couple minutes later the entire gym was watching we also did not have any head gear. My question is should I keep sparring with this guy or should I look for some one else to spar with. The reason that I joined this new fight club is to gain more experience as a fighter not a all out war every day thing. I want to be able to work in my technique and my stamina.

Maybe he just wanted to stamp some authority on you? Trying to show off?

haha, or maybe that WAS his 50%!? You might have just got into the ring with Ivan Drago.

You did the right thing, you give what you get. Surely not everyone in the gym is like this? You should tell him to steady on, or are you worried that he might think you are being a bit chicken?.

Nobody ever learnt anything by getting beaten up.

I'd give it another chance. Although if it happens again I would say forget it. Nobody is going to learn anything if all you do is try to knock each others teeth out. A gym like this seems like it's got more testosterone than brains.

These sort of problems should be worked out by the trainer. You are there to learn, he is there to teach. Letting two guys fight before they are ready for it is a good way for somebody to get hurt. Don't forget that boxing is a dangerous sport and you could get seriously injured if you don't get the proper training.

By the way, who is that in your avatar?

This gym sounds totally ****ed up. It's one thing for a guy to get carried away and the trainer be too distracted to notice but no trainer should let you get in with out head gear AND then not pay any attention.

If I went to a new gym and they told me to spar without headgear I would tell them to **** off -- heck, if my CURRENT gym told me to spar without headgear I'd tell them to **** off.

If I was really nasty about it, I'd place a couple of phone calls, one of them to USA Boxing, and another to their insurance carrier.
