anyone that says mma fighters are a joke are just closed minded. The best wrestlers in the WORLD are in competition thier. This is a ridiculious question anyways. Its like saying my dad can beat your dad. Mayweather has a big mouth for saying anything and not backing it up. I hope oscar wires his jaw shut and 50 cent while he's at it.

Being a boxing guy myself, speaking from personal experience, I think a lot of times boxers diss MMA because with the explosion of UFC, people these days get the impression that MMA is the be all-end all of combat sports. People seem to think of MMA as more of real fight situation than a SPORT, when it is infact a SPORT. So then people look at boxing and MMA and decide to make the conclusion that one group of fighters are "tougher" than the other. Bottom line is, MMA is not street fighting. It's a SPORT. There are rules, there are techniques that are used specifically to the sport (especially with a cage). Just like somebody said earlier in the the thread, if you put the greatest boxer of all time against the greatest tennis player of all time and put them on the court in a tennis match, who do you think would win? Obviously the tennis player. It doesn't make the boxer any less of a man, or less tougher or mean that he doesn't train as hard...it just means that he plays a different sport.
Boxer vs MMA guy in an MMA ring: MMA guy wins
Boxer vs MMA guy in a boxing ring: Boxer wins
Boxer vs MMA guy in a street fight (had to add that lol) who knows, its anyones game then.I know that sounds dumb, but I really feel, deep down inside, thats what a lot of people are REALLY thinking when they spark this debate. Human nature, we just want to know who the toughest MF out there is PERIOD. This is why people tend to like MMA so much-because it appears to be more like a "real" fight but in reality it is just a sport like boxing and its nothing like most real street fights.
One thing I dont like is how so many MMA guys talk about how they train in boxing, so they have that aspect down, but boxers dont know anything about kicking or ground game. Who says? It's not like the boxers going to be a limp **** the second he hits the ground. Sure, he may not have been formally trained but it doesn't mean he has no ground skill what so ever. And comparing a world class wrestler to a boxer, no **** the wrestler will win on the ground.....but there have been TONS of MMA fights where a world class wrestler went against a primarily ju jitsu or striking guy whom which he could have dominated on the mat and still lost the fight to the guy who was far better at standup than wrestling. Styles make fights. Even in MMA there are guys who are great strikers and kind of suck on the ground or great ground wrestlers and suck on their feet. Only a very select few MMA guys in the world are truely amazing all around and can say that they are cream of the crop in every aspect of their fighting-stand up and ground.Last edited by Hourglass; 05-03-2007, 04:20 PM.

I would say this just about sums up the whole arguement. I think where people get confused is because they don't understand that MMA fighting is based on an actual martial art. They call boxing the "Sweet Science", because that's what it is. And Mixed Martial Arts is what it is mixed martial arts. In a no holds barred match, mixed martial arts will most likely win, unless he gets knocked out during initial exchaneg of hands. I personally like both. There is room for both. I love to see people get knocked out and really don't like see people getting they **** broke. But seeing someone get choked out is always pretty funny to me...

yah sean sherk admitted that in his interview about the whole boxing ring/mma ring. People get knocked out alot in UFC, some of the best Knockouts in a fight come from Pride/UFC...they havent been around long as boxing but still have one of the best knockout highlights in the world...boxing does too but Im just pointed out that in mma now it aint all about subs and breaking bones.

I've searched this discussion because i was interested in comments on Floyds interview and trash he said.
The amount of ****** posts here is insane.
First of all boxing is sport of fist fighting, MMA is sport of fighting.
The amount off skill level some mma guys have in their disciplines is at very high level.
Nogueira, Werdum have spent years doing BJJ, and they are very skilled at it, former champions.
Lindland, Coleman, Henderson, all olympic wrestlers.
Yoshida, Takimoto, olympic medalists in judo.
Etc...
Differences for boxer in boxing match and MMA match:
1. In mma match, boxer needs to lover his stance, otherwise he would get taken down in minute.
2. He can't put his hands low, because he would get head kicked and put to sleep.
3. He needs to have different footwork because of takedowns and kicks.
Also, boxers would have problems with letting there hands go because of fear of takedown etc.
They are not used to dirrty boxing, knees and elbows from clinch etc.
They are not used to ground and pound, submissions.
Example:
Phil Baroni - average MMA fighter
Yosuke Nishijima - average boxer
Baroni submitted Nishijima in 3 minutes. He took Nishijima down with no problems, passed his guard and submitted him.
Baroni is not known for his ground game.
Boxers in MMA match have punchers chance.
But with some serious training, boxers have some real advantages in MMA. Like instinct to strike and not just holding base etc. But we need to see a boxer do that.
Boxer vs. MMA fighter in boxing - Boxers wins
Boxer vs. MMA fighter in MMA match - MMA fighter wins.
