My main gyms were Owings Mills Boxing club (out of the Gold's Gym up there) and BXF (in Millersville).
Hung out at Baltimore Boxing in Fells Point for a month or 2 before I decided to move on.
I knew guys from UMAR, Sugar Ray's gym, Lochraven, Brooklyn Park, and Laurel.

Of all those, I think Owings Mills had it right and their guys usually got slick with minimum wear and tear.
I don't know where their coach (Phil Golbrecht) is training out of now because Gold's kicked them out.

I think the hardcore mentality's directly handed down from Philly; but Kronk's supposed to be the same way.

Typed up a huge reply but lost it.

The big problem with the gyms is that most of them play favorites, feeding anybody else to their favorites as cannon fodder so their boy feeds on 'em and gets better.

You were at Charm City right?
I don't know too much about them.

The most sure-fire recommendation I can give you is to train with Phil Golbrecht somewhere in north Baltimore; do a websearch on Owings Mills boxing club for his contact info. he doesn't train out of the Gold's gym anymore, but i hear he's been training some guys.

He will give you a great repertoire of defense before letting you spar. he was one of my first coaches and I noticed that people that trained under him really get slick. Not a blood & guts type guy, but you'll learn the science & get in great shape with minimal wear n tear on your brain.

After him, I'd suggest Laurel- hooking up with one of the guys that posts on ********'s forums, or maybe Baltimore Boxing- if you get in good with Jake Smith or one of the other trainers there.

I took 3 months off after getting KOd in my first fight. Don't drink, don't party too much, don't worry about running or any type of impact training, just walk, swim, or do elliptical. Strenuous activity gave me headaches so even weights were out. Just try to take it easy & go for cardio vascular health. Keep your diet from going crazy too. When you're ready, come back slowly.

I don't think you're done, i think you just need to train smarter & take better care of your health. Make sure you got a solid skillset the next time you step it up & have to defend yourself.

DC gyms are kind of another story, I think we lost 2 of the best ones in the past 5 years or so. Downtown looks alright. If Midtown's a small lil rowhouse with a ring and 2 bags then that's the one I'd go for- if it's the one i think, the pictures on the wall will explain why.

good luck just don't get discouraged
